Vehicle Description
1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible
The Cadillac Eldorado has always been a trend setter. The Personal
Luxury Car market segment that Cadillac created with the Eldorado
was growing. The front-wheel drive version was going through its
very first redesign with the 1971-1972 models. It was a completely
new Fleetwood Eldorado not only in design but also in spirit. This
1976 Fleetwood Eldorado was available as a coupe and a luxury
convertible replacing the DeVille convertible series. The Eldorado
regained the iconic fender skirts. The "Standard of the World" was
still the luxury leader. The Fleetwood Eldorado was still
unmistakably Cadillac.
For consignment, a sizable, luxurious, convenience smattered, long
smooth cruiser piece of massive Detroit iron in this 1976 Eldorado
model. Front wheel drive, (look ma!!... no hump!), sharp angled
design, nice chrome trimmings, near perfect chrome bumpers, fender
skirts, leather interior, all draped in white interior leather
ready for a night out on the town, or a cruise up to the clubhouse
ready to turn heads in classic style from 1976. A few faults and
our consigner states that he has lost interest and is ready to part
with this classic.
Exterior
Gas crisis? We don't need a stinking gas crisis, we will build it
even bigger, and allow it to drive on regular gas!!! And this
straight steel slabbed sided car which pays very close attention to
its gaps and pampers its chrome trimmings is definitely going to be
the belle of the ball. A V shaped massive grille with matching hood
atop, dual headlights on either side and cathedral turn signal and
cornering lights at the front and rear edges, you are driving
around in a 3-bedroom apartment on wheels. Trimming for the wheel
well surrounds, rockers and a fine trim spear in mid-section with
exceedingly long rear quarter and deck, this car bleeds class. A
white padded canvas convertible top with a rear glass window,
allows for your potential famous passengers to remain in total
comfort while they are whisked down the superhighways and byways of
the country. Lighter blue in beautiful condition replaces the
original Cotillion White and covers all these steel panels and it
is miles deep and very nicely applied. Badging all looks great, as
does chrome which remains in like new condition throughout. Blue
painted dish style wheel coverings are on all 4 corners.
Interior
A swing of the door and it's a lot like opening a well-balanced
safe door! Heavy, but easy to do. On the doors are power controls,
chromed panels, white stitched leather, and deep blue carpeted
lowers for the doors. A peppering of wood applique is also seen on
these door panels. Inside dual ultra-wide white leather overstuffed
buckets cozy up to each other and sport some blue piping. These
chairs are showing some creases as finely aged leather tends to do,
sport plenty of power adjustments, and are large enough to
accommodate a 3rd front row passenger. In the back, a wide bench
matching the front setup stretches from side to side. The standard
square and rectangle dash courtesy GM is in front and has the
trappings of a high optioned car in the form of cruise control,
climate control, AM/FM/Stereo, A/C, power steering, power brakes,
and all very clean. An inlay wood and blue rimmed 3 spoked star
style steering wheel fronts the original looking dash. Blue carpet
floods the floors and is just excellent.
Drivetrain
A rebuilt 500ci V8 correct for this year engine fits nicely into
the large, fairly clean, engine bay. A little patina, but a
4-barrel carburetor feeds it, and a rebuilt last year TH425
automatic transmission is on back. 2.73 are the gears for the final
drive ratio.
Undercarriage
Like new underneath with pristine black surfaces and absolutely no
rust. It looks like it was a frame off restoration; it is that well
detailed. Independent coil springs for the front suspension, and 4
link with coil springs are on the back. Power disc brakes provided
the stopping power for both front and rear wheels.
Drive-Ability
She started with a turn of the key but much to our dismay a very
noticeable rod knock was heard. This thwarted our drive so we could
only test some of the luxo-cruisers functions. A few notes as the
wipers need attending to and do not work, the power antenna is
inoperable and the A/C doesn't work.
Like a freshly dry-cleaned blue double-knit tuxedo, this example of
steel luxury and styling from 1976 when cars were built for status,
and it was measured by the inch. Front wheel drive, great shape all
over, a nice example of big car style, all buttoned up under the
laurel wreath and crest sprung hood ornament, and white canvas
convertible top, you will feel like a Kennedy!
