Vehicle Description
1965 Imperial Crown Convertible
I wanna be a billionaire so xxxxx bad
Buy all of the things I never had
Uh, I wanna be on the cover of Forbes magazine
Smiling next to Oprah and the Queen
Just like you are rolling through Chappaquiddick with the Kennedys,
top down and all high style, this car harkens back to that, (age of
innocence NOT!). Although our consignment is a wonderful example of
the mid 1960s wretched excess. I'd much rather be a have than a
have not. Now honey, go get your mink stole. We are going over to
the chief of the agency's house for fondue and high balls, and I
don't feel like putting the top up. We give you the 1965 Imperial
Crown.
Exterior
Big steel creates the ultra-smooth with well minded gapped side
slabs and literally all surfaces of this car, and they are
supersized. This large and in charge skate is all bathed in black
cherry, but there has been some debate about this color. Let's
leave it at "you need to see it to appreciate it." Also, our crack
decoder will chime in and say and I quote "-After extensive viewing
I believe the car was originally Spanish Red Metallic (T Code).
This color was not available with the Black Plum interior thus
creating the Special-Order Paint Code". What I can tell you, is
gazing at is mesmerizing and is truly unique and fits the car like
a glove, (If the glove doesn't fit...well you get that!).
Wonderfully large amounts of chrome adornments all very befitting
for its styling are attached throughout, and break up the paint,
highlight the grille and rear, and add some class and contrast to
the paint. Also, all beautifully shined and preserved. Side view
mirrors are mounted to the tops of the front quarters and a
slightly curved front glass is pure class. Speaking of class lets
go to the continental rear trunk lid with its squared off bump up
and out in the middle with I M P E R I A L badging in a
semicircular setup. Just below starts the dual spear edged
taillights with a winged icon in the center of a round chromed
design which mimics the lettering above. Just below is another
large pristine chromed bumper. Looking at the side view of this car
the front and rear appear to be italicized with their rearward
tilt. Yards of gray cloth make up the top and it is nice and tight,
with a matching tonneau covering to hide it when it's down.
Beautifully designed 18-inch wheels have the looks of a fluted
greek pedimented portico with arched punch outs adorn all 4
corners. These are wrapped in thin whites all around.
Interior
Looking from above gives us the best view of the styling genius
that comes with this model year. We can see a band of wood applique
encircling the entire interior. Neatly inserted into this surround
are low back wide buckets in front with buttoned backed tuck and
roll inserts and smooth black bolsters. White piping delineates the
surfaces and highlights the edges of the backs as well. The wide
rear bench sports the same pattern and has an iconic speaker within
the mid-section of the back of the bench. Door panels bleed
richness with the band of wood applique, a central black horizontal
stitched panel which interacts with the armrest and has an
ergonomically angled brushed aluminum panel with 60's looking
toggles and an airplane throttle door actuator. The dash front
continues with the dual pointed spear genre and utilizes the wood
applique band running through it. Horizontal design gauges and a
clock as well as other power amenities are within this dash. On the
dash top, we can see a high beam sentinel, automatically dimming
the lights, because after all, pushing that floor button is so
pedestrian! A wonderful thin rimmed silver and chrome steering
wheel is fronting the dash and it too has that light thin tie 60's
mood to it. Floors are covered with black thick pile carpeting,
which is like new, and some sportier red striped over black field
floor mats protect the thick pile. Pushbutton interior is
representative of the space craze and futuristic pills for meals
frenzy that was prevalent at this time. A shout out to the trunk
which presents better than a showroom which begs the question when
can I move in??!
Drivetrain
Under the showroom finished hood, sits a perfectly restored correct
413ci V8. It is topped with a 4-barrel carburetor under the correct
and nicely labeled single snout round air cleaner covering. A near
perfect green painted block and valve coverings, and no corrosion
for this engine bolt ons and brake cylinder housings. On back is an
A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission to which you smooth
down the highway, and the rear axle is an 8.75 inch 2.93 Sure Grip
axle. Just beautiful looking ultra-smooth endless power. I'll throw
caution to the wind when I fill this tank.
Undercarriage
Like the rest of the car, just beautiful condition. All painted
black with some extra undercoating and all structurally sound.
Hardly even any road dirt for this X framed queen. Dual exhaust,
torsion bar front and leaf spring rear suspension along with power
drum brakes on all 4 corners, and I'm ready for the magic carpet
ride.
Drive-Ability
I turned the key and the big engine came to life albeit very
quietly. A super smooth idle, and off to the test track with neck
snapping acceleration, bias free panic stopping and even good
handling for a large piece of Detroit iron. There were a few snags
in the workability of some of the interior functions, those being
the AC blowing warm and the radio had no sound.
What a wonderful piece of mid 1960's excess sums it up!
