Vehicle Description
1968 Chevrolet Impala
The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size car built by Chevrolet for
model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and from 2000 onwards. The
Impala is Chevrolet's popular flagship passenger car and is
generally among the better selling automobiles in the United
States. For its debut in 1958, the Impala was distinguished from
other models by its symmetrical triple taillights.
For consignment, the elusive animal that is prevalent on the
Serengeti plains in namesake and performance and speed, this 1968
Bowtie Impala is presenting itself. An engine rebuild in the 80's
and now a mere 500 miles as the consignor states since that
rebuild. The rear quarters were replaced last year, and the car
underwent a respray. Run like the wind to get over to Classic Auto
Mall and snap this big game up!
Exterior
A bit rough on the exterior with the new respray which has covered
some rust bubbling, previous repairs and showing rust on the
rockers and inconsistent gaps. There are a few large scratches seen
as well. Unfortunately, these areas of concern were not addressed
prior to the respray. The paint is similar to the Ash Gold the car
came from the factory with and it has a contrasting palomino ivory
top. Sporty lines abound with the raked forward grille and the way
the hood gives over the headlights it looks like it is staring and
sneering at you. These lines continue on the back of the car with
the roofline taking its time to gently slope rearward to the trunk
deck and ending up with the trio of taillights which is a symbol
the car is an Impala as all have spited this feature. Trimmings are
shiny, and bumpers are in very good condition. 14-inch Cragar
polished 5 spoke wheels are on all 4 corners.
Interior
As we swing the door we are in avocado green heaven! Door panels
are faux stitched panels with molded in buttons, and some accenting
chrome for the cranks and door actuator. The armrest on the drivers
side is torn and the padding is showing through. Seats are two
benches stretching from side to side, the front being split for
easy access to the back. These chairs are all covered up in brown
furry sheepskins and we do not know the condition of the seats
underneath. A standard GM dash is original and upfront also showing
in the avocado with chrome dials and black gauges. An original
steering wheel is fronting this dash and has 3 spokes and a green
surround in plastic. The dash top is a slightly darker padded green
vinyl and shows no cracks. Gold/green carpeting on the floors, and
above is a tight green vinyl headliner.
Drivetrain
Looking under the hood we find an unrestored engine bay with a
consignor-stated rebuilt mill done in the mid 1980s. This engine is
original to the car and is a 307ci V8. It is topped with a 2 barrel
carburetor and has a 2-speed automatic Powerglide transmission on
back. The rear axle is a 10-bolt, 3.08 version. There is some wear
and surface rust throughout this engine and bay, and also a fair
amount of dust and dirt from the car sitting.
Undercarriage
Surface rust is peppering the underside surfaces and frame
throughout the undercarriage of this car. In some spots it is a
heavier coating, particularly on the rockers, suspension and brake
castings. Independent coil springs are up front along with drum
brakes, and on back is a 4 link with coil springs and drum brake
configuration.
Drive-Ability
It started with a bit of pumping the pedal but it was off to the
test track. Here it performed well with smooth acceleration and
bias free panic stopping. The wipers are not working at high speed,
the horn clicks but does not blow, a generator light is on, and the
consignor states it needs a new water pump as it makes lots of
noise when running.
A nice looking line to this 2-door coupe, but in need of some TLC.
Runs fine, cosmetically there are detractions through the exterior
and interior. Not a massive amount of work, but when it's done this
car has a great original color combo and 60s interior all in iconic
avocado. Eat it up.
