The 280 SL or W113 has become a must have of collectors and
investors alike. These have continued an uphill swing of value for
many years now and no one sees a downside in the future. These cars
are incredibly sexy from every angle, with its wide and short wheel
base and its low roof line. This is one of very few convertibles
that looks as good with the top down as it does with its soft-top
or factory "Pagoda" hard top on. These 280 SL's are such a better
car to drive then the 190 SL it replaced in 1963. This particular
absolute stunner of a 280 that we are pleased to present has been
owned by our consignor since 1975. The seller was a local dealer
principle for a large dealership and recalls the car coming in on
trade from a gentleman from the Flint, MI area who was the original
owner. He thought he would have the car for a year a two, enjoy it
and then sell it again on his used car lot. He drove and enjoyed it
for many summers until 2015 when he sent it out for a cosmetic,
paint and mechanical restoration being finished a couple years
later at the tune of over $85,000. In addition to that expense,
there is a stack of other service receipts for the years prior.
This car is a matching numbers car finished in Dark Red (DunkelRot)
over black leather. This is the original color combination as
indicated on the original build ticket that also accompanies the
car with owners manual and original keys. There were less than 900
total 1971 280 SL's produced for 1971, under half of those were US
cars and who knows how many are finished with this color
combination. In addition to this car being gorgeous, it has working
dealer installed A/C. All the lights work as they should, both tops
go on and off as they should, the car starts, runs and goes down
the road very nicely and gets all the looks. We encourage any and
all inquiries.
