For Sale: 1950 Buick Super in Greenville, Rhode Island

Vehicle Description

1950 Buick Super Convertible

Motor no. 59141115 (car is titled by this number)
Body no. 3538

Series 50. Body Style no. 56C. 124 hp, 263.3 cu. in. OHV inline eight-cylinder engine, two-speed Dynaflow automatic transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs, live axle rear suspension with coil springs, and four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 121.5 in.

The first of Buick’s new postwar designs came in 1949, with solidly built, lavishly trimmed automobiles sporting a fully modern look inspired by contemporary aircraft. For the following season, Buicks grew even dressier, with a large, distinctive and unique grille whose ‘teeth’ descended down underneath the car. A nod towards future styling trends in which too much chrome was just enough, it made the Buick instantly stand out among the crowd, and remains a great favorite of enthusiasts – especially so since the 1950 models would be the only Buicks to have this styling feature. Four series with offered, including the well-appointed Super line. The Super convertible was deservedly popular, with 12,259 built, and remains a wonderful choice today.

The example offered here was bought from a doctor in Massachusetts by the current owner in the early 1990s. It is identified by its body tag as being an authentic Super convertible, style no. 56C, with body built at South Gate, California. Recipient of a handsome older restoration and today it presents nicely overall in Carlsbad Black with red upholstery and beige top. The option codes on the tag reflect equipment of radio and antenna (A), heater and defroster (C), Dynaflow transmission (M), and a windshield washer (D). Further, the body series’ ‘X’ suffix indicates the car was equipped with hydraulically operated windows and top.  The car has a very charming overall appearance, with light wear to the interior from use, and a driver-quality but clean and tidy engine compartment, displaying dual horns. Lap belts have been fitted to the interior for improved safety while cruising the highway, and dual side mirrors are provided, with the driver’s unit also featuring a spotlight.

As the world prepares for a return to cruise nights this summer, there would be few better candidates than this comfy old Buick Super with its dynamic one-year-only styling.
