Vehicle Description
The last of the V8 rear-wheel-drive Monte Carlo SS coupes have a
strong following, and they seem to be the right muscle car for guys
who have outgrown their Camaro fixation. This low-mileage 1985
Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS is a very tidy example that's been
well-maintained but not modified (sans the wheels), making it the
one to own if you've been looking for one of these cool coupes.
To my eye, Black Cherry was the most attractive of the SS colors,
since it shows off the stylish Monte Carlo shape as well as the
unique SS details without hiding them in a plain black or white
paint scheme. It looks to have been repainted at some point, and
that paint is in very good condition showing only light signs of
age and the urethane ground effects and bumper covers aren't
damaged or cracked. They left-off the requisite SS stripes and by
doing so showed remarkable restraint (we think the look is much
cleaner this way), with the subtle chin spoiler and lip spoiler on
the trunk lid doing most of the talking in the aggressive
department. According to the clean vehicle history report it does
not appear to have ever been hit and it's certainly not rusty, and
with the way those giant doors fit, there's little doubt that this
is a solid car in all the areas that matter. Some of these cars got
T-tops, but for a solid structure and a quiet interior, a hardtop
like this is what you really want. It has lived its life under the
conscientious eye of just 3 owners since new (and the first owner
didn't sell the car until 2019), and with only 45,101 actual miles
on the clock, it's obviously always been treated as a weekend car,
and because it was always garaged the dreaded tin worm is obviously
a non-issue. For such an affordable car, this one's in really great
shape.
Most SS models got the same GM burgundy cloth interior, but
obviously that wouldn't be overkill with the burgundy exterior, so
this one thankfully carries gray cloth seats instead, lending the
formal Monte Carlo a bit of a sophisticated character inside. As
you might expect from the low mileage, the upholstery is in
excellent condition with only very minor signs of use and age on
the driver's seat that looks incredibly clean. Headliners were
always a problem on these cars and they tend to sag after a few
years, but you'll be pleased to learn that the headliner is nice
and taut, and the only issue inside are the stress cracks on the
dash - a common occurrence on GMs from this era. The Monte Carlo
came loaded, and this car includes power windows and locks, A/C, a
tilt steering column, and cruise control, all befitting its luxury
car heritage. The original Delco radio is gone, replaced by a
retro-style AM/FM/AUX stereo that was professionally installed so
the dash wasn't all hacked up to get it to fit. And as the last of
GM's big rear-wheel-drive luxury coupes, it offers a spacious back
seat and a cavernous trunk.
Chevy's 305 cubic inch small block V8 was the only engine available
for the Monte Carlo SS, and in 1985 it used a 4-barrel carburetor
to make 180 horsepower and a nice wallop of traditional V8 torque.
Despite being one of the most modification-friendly engines ever
created, this one remains almost entirely stock which is good news
for guys who value authenticity. Speed Tek long-tube headers and a
black open-element air cleaner were added to the otherwise
superclean and stock engine bay, and everything is tidy and
well-maintained. Backed by a stock 2004R automatic overdrive
transmission and acceleration-friendly gears, it's surprisingly
quick around town, yet cruises along on the highway at high-speeds
with ease. The undercarriage is quite original but shows no obvious
signs of trouble, and features a stock 35mm rear sway bar, new coil
springs and shocks all around, and power steering and power front
disc brakes that help this SS drive like a dream. The soundtrack
has been dramatically improved via an H-pipe dual exhaust with
throaty Speed Tek mufflers that turns down just before the 10-bolt
rear end. Finishing off the look, this dialed-in SS wears cool
Ridler wheels (stock Rallye wheels are offered with the sale upon
request) wrapped in Toyo performance radials.
We sell every one of these we can get our hands on, so there's
obviously a strong following out there. Clean, well-maintained,
low-mileage Monte Carlo SS coupes are getting harder to find all
the time, so don't delay, call now!
