The first of many improvements to Porsche’s legendary 911 sports car came in 1966, two years after production had commenced, with the introduction of the Porsche 911S. Easily distinguishable by its stylish Fuchs five-spoked alloy wheels, the Porsche 911S featured a heavily revised engine producing 160 bhp.

In 1967, Porsche tested a new “Sport-o-matic” transmission at the 84-hour Marathon de la Route held at the Nürburgring. Four Porsches were entered, two of which were equipped with the Sportomatic transmission. The transmission proved effective, with the #14 Porsche 911R equipped with the Sportomatic winning in impressive fashion. The success led Porsche to introduce in 1968 what it termed an automatic transmission, the Sportomatic, though it had no fully automatic setting. The Sportomatic employed a conventional torque converter coupled to a vacuum-operated single-disc dry clutch ahead of the modified 911 four-speed gearbox. When the gear lever was moved, the clutch would disengage, re-engaging as soon as the driver’s hand was removed.

The magnificent 1968 Porsche 911S Coupe ‘Sportomatic’ featured here is finished in gorgeous deep burgundy over beige with Pepita inserts. This European 911S has been subject to a comprehensive, no-expense-spared three-year restoration by factory-trained Porsche technicians, including a complete rebuild of its matching numbers engine. Over $110,000 in receipts accompany this investment-grade 1968 Porsche 911S Coupe ‘Sportomatic,’ as well as its original Kardex verifying its original color and equipment. I personally believe the investment potential of this extremely rare and desired Porsche model will grow beyond your imagination. This is an incredible opportunity for the most demanding collector, investor, or enthusiast to own one of the best motorcars at an investment price!
