Vehicle Description
1976 Buick LeSabre Custom
The LeSabre nameplate made its first appearance on the 1951 Lesabre
show car which introduced the world to aircraft-inspired design
elements such as the wrap-around windshield and tail fins. In 1959
LeSabre became the new moniker for what had previously been known
as the Buick Special. The Buick LeSabre was offered in a full line
of body styles except between 1965 and 1969 when its station wagon
variant was dropped from Buick's full-size offerings. Only minor
styling changes highlighted the 1976 Buick LeSabre, which was the
final year for the 1971-vintage bodyshell, the unpopular and
rarely-ordered driver- and passenger-side airbag option, the 455ci
V8 and hardtop body styles. Changes included rectangular quad
headlights placed into a unit with the turn signals set directly
below and at the center was a new classic egg-crate grille, no
longer integrated with the headlights, making it more prominent.
The 1976 LeSabre was the only American full-size car with a
standard V6 engine, which was Buick's brand-new 3.8-litre V6
engine.
Hold your hats because here we have an all original 1976 Buick
LeSabre Custom with a mere 42,741 original miles. Spending most of
its life in a garage, is highly optioned, and runs like a Swiss
watch. Oh, and also it LOOKS original with barely a mark on it! The
final year before the redesign and downsizing, get it while it's
hot!
Exterior
Mount Vernon Cream paint in excellent shiny condition shows like it
just drove off the dealership floor. Bumpers have their guards at
the ready, and cornering lights have been installed. The side
panels, straight and true with factory gaps, have faux chrome
trimmed vents in the fenders for just a little body bling. Chrome
side mirrors, and a pristine complimentary tan vinyl roof complete
with extra quarter windows on either side covers this sedan. The
filler panels are still present and crack free, a rarity on cars of
this era. 15" chrome Buick rally wheels wrapped in thin whitewall
rubber are on all 4 corners. This car is definitely large and in
charge.
Interior
With Dark Saddle colored corduroy on the front split bench with a
central fold down armrest, complete with smooth vinyl bolsters on
the bottoms. The same can be said for the rear bench, all in
perfectly preserved condition with no fading, or staining. Gold
carpet covers the floor surfaces, and it appears new. The large
doors with a mix of soft Saddle vinyl, tan plastic and a wood burl
have power windows, power mirrors, power locks and a remote mirror
control all in chrome. The dash is extremely clean with a silver
rectangular cluster in front of the driver. It is topped with
padded vinyl with no cracks or marks and fronted with wood veneer
like it was just skinned from the tree! A note the trunk has a
Buick shield logo in black, and nary a mark on it, like never been
used condition...Dy-no-mite!
Drivetrain
A lift of the long hood and we are greeted with an original engine
bay with the original engine, showing some surface rust, and patina
on plastic parts, but very nicely preserved. A great 350ci V8 with
a gaggle of wires and hoses, tubes and emissions gadgets attached.
A 4-barrel carburetor is atop and bolted on back is a TH400 3-speed
automatic transmission. A 10-bolt rear axle puts power to the
ground. Can you dig it?
Undercarriage
Save for the expected surface rust on bare steel parts, the
underside is very clean with some rust proofing spray, but
otherwise original from the factory, with no structural issues
anywhere. We note power steering along with power front disc brakes
and power rear drum brakes. An independent coil spring front
suspension along with a rear 4 link with coil springs gives us the
couch like ride.
Drivability
Slipping behind the wheel of this land cruiser was akin to sitting
down on my living room couch, it's that comfortable. The 350ci V8
handled our test track with ease and even the boat- like handling
did not deter me from a big smile as I cruised around for a second
lap. All functions were operating properly at the time of my drive.
Groovy man!
Once in a great while we come upon a car that is too good to be
true, but it is true, to the max. This car is absolutely mid 1970's
slammin, and that's no Jive talkin. Wired for luxury, all the
options it's spiffy. So, are we cool, Man? Come over to Classic
Auto Mall and have a look at this all original Detroit Piece of
Iron. Catch you on the flip side!
