For Sale: 1973 BMW Bavaria in Cleveland, Ohio

Vehicle Description

This 1973 BMW Bavaria was acquired by the seller in 2017 and has since been fitted with a replacement 3.5-liter inline-six reportedly sourced from a 1988 7-series. The car is finished in white over a blue interior and equipped with a four-speed manual transmission, dual Weber carburetors, an electric fuel pump, Bilstein HD shocks, sway bars, and a sunroof. Additional work performed under current ownership has included servicing the transmission, fitting rebuilt rear brake calipers, reupholstering the interior, and replacing the rear muffler, fuel level sender, the motor mounts, and the differential mounts.

The car is finished in white and features chrome bumpers, polished trim, quad headlamps, a driver-side mirror, and a sunroof. The seller notes that the left-rear quarter panel received a two-stage repaint with an aerosol can due to rust. Paint chips and scratches are visible on the body, and a spare windshield is included in the sale. Photos taken during paintwork are shown in the gallery.

Silver-finished 14” wheels wear polished BMW hubcaps and are wrapped with 195/70 Confidence C3 all-season tires. Curb rash is noted on the wheels. Bilstein HD shocks, 28mm and 22mm sway bars, and brake lines have been installed, and additional work performed under current ownership consisted of a refresh of the front suspension and rear brakes, including fitting rebuilt calipers and replacement rotors and pads.

The seats were re-foamed and reupholstered in blue vinyl by Michael’s Custom Upholstery of Tacoma, Washington in 2018 and are joined by matching door panels and carpeting. Amenities include an analog VDO clock, and wood trim on the dash. The blower motor for the ventilation fan was replaced in 2018.

fronts VDO instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. The seller reports that the turn signal indicator remains illuminated. The five-digit odometer shows 73k miles, approximately 1,500 of which were added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The replacement 3.5-liter inline-six was reportedly sourced from a 1988 7-series and installed in December 2020 by La Jolla Independent BMW Service of California. New bearings and timing chain and tensioner rails were installed at that time, and the engine is equipped with a Weber 38/38 carburetor, MSD ignition, and an electric fuel pump.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission that was refreshed in 2018 with a replacement selector shaft seal, output shaft seal, and speed drive o-ring. The clutch cylinders are said to have been replaced, and new transmission and differential mounts were also installed. The seller notes that the clutch has a high friction point and describes rust on the left rocker panel as well as prior rust repair on the right rocker. Additional underside photos are shown in the gallery along with receipts from current ownership.
