Vehicle Description
1970 Dodge Swinger 340
In a twist of fate, 1970 also witnessed the arrival of the sleek
and similarly equipped Plymouth Duster 340 for $261 less (in base
trim). With its sharp, new fastback styling and a sporting image,
the Duster 340 managed to outsell its sibling by a little more than
11,000 units. Consequently, 1970 Dart Swinger 340's have always
been somewhat scarce. How does all of this translate to today's
vintage muscle market? Though built in fewer numbers, the Swinger
340 is more affordable-perfect for the gearhead looking for
something unusual with kick, looks and a low cost of entry.
For consignment, a Top Banana painted Dodge Swinger 340 in top
banana condition. Good enough to take 2nd place at the Mopars at
Maple Grove Raceway, this 3-owner car has new floor pans, and a
rebuilt 340ci V8 that was not a total tear down, but more like a
refresh. Looking racy and ready to peel out!
Exterior
Top Banana respray paint covers rust free straight panels for this
machine. It is all looking factory from the grille to the rear
black bumble bee stripe. We can see a fair amount of body filler
used for the lower rear quarter panels but no rust. Dual hood
scoops also in black adorn the hood, which cozies up to the front
glass, which is all surrounded by beautiful shiny stainless trim,
as is all glass for this cabin cover. Badging is unique in its
placement as it comes to a roost on the rear quarters just past the
doors. A chromed gas cap, and inset tail lighting into the rear
bumper add to the buttoned up look, and just below are dual exhaust
tips peeking out from under the bumper. A shout out to the
curvature of the rear glass which also adds to the Swinger for 1970
look. 15-inch 5 spoke Cragar wheels are on all 4 corners and are
looking chromed to the nines. A swinger with a stinger...read

Interior
As we open the doors to "slip" inside we shake hands with plenty of
vertical tuck and roll insert panels among smooth black vinyl
framing for the outside of the door panels. A shiny door actuator
is attached to a black armrest, along with a window crank and
chromed mirror joystick. Sleek high back buckets again with the
mixture of tuck and roll and smooth black vinyl looking nearly
perfect sitting next to the stylish center console. Brushed
aluminum covers the top off this console, and a Seattle space
needle styled chromed shift lever resides within reach of the
driver. The metal inward V shaped dash painted black with more
brushed aluminum fields housing the temp sliders and a newer retro
style radio just below for the center is here. Just below are a
trio of aftermarket gauges. The instrument cluster is pure factory
and very clean and simple. For the back bench, more tuck and roll
black vinyl stretches across and these interior charts are floating
in a sea of clean black carpeting. Above is a nice tight black
headliner. This car is just ripe with perfection.
Drivetrain
Underneath the hood in a fully restored banana painted engine bay,
is a nicely presenting but not original 340ci V8. There is a
gleaming 4-barrel carburetor atop, covered by an open chromed air
filter cover. Ribbed Edelbrock valve coverings are noted, and on
back a A904 3-speed automatic transmission resides. For the rear
axle, 8-3/4 inches with 3.55 gear ratio are combined to spin the
tires. This engine came from the factory with an aggressive
camshaft and a pair of big valve heads, which can produce
275hp.
Undercarriage
All looking good on the rust front with new floor pans and solid
suspension. We can note a small area of invasive rust on the
unibody seam just front of the left rear unibody rail. Torsion bar
front suspension, and leaf spring for the rear, along with disc
brakes in front and drums for the back. Headers and a Turbo muffler
system is in dual form and snaking its way rearward.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, smooth runner and great accelerator. The interior
is as comfy as it is flawless, and all functions were working
perfectly. Nice handling and quick stopping bias free braking was
at hand for this test drive.
Overall a nice and not oft seen version of the 1970 Swinger 340.
Banana paint only 3 years old, and an engine refresh and we are in
award winning low hanging fruit territory. Check it out because if
you monkey around too long, you'll miss out on your chance to peel
out.
