Vehicle Description
1962 Ford Thunderbird Coupe
The Jet age is in full swing, the country is riding high on
Beatlemania, towering beehive hair doo's, fur boots, and getting to
the moon before the end of the decade. To mirror these times, Ford
Motor Company put elements of design into the Thunderbird for
1962.
For consignment, a multiple owner "Bullet Bird" born at the Wixom
assembly plant, in October of 1961. With a jet age front, and
thruster rear taillight configuration, all in original condition,
this hardtop is perfect for a boulevard cruise that will certainly
turn heads. Kelsey Hayes wheels and Coker tires, put your bandanna
on and your Wayfarers and press the gas!
Exterior
A wonderfully textured Thunderbird Landau covered top all in black
with the chromed Landau bars on the B pillars tops this beauty.
Deep black, straight panels, nice chrome, good brite work, and
correct badging awaits its key being turned so it can stretch its
legs on some open highway. From its bullet nose to the thruster
rear taillights straight steel with well minded gaps abound. Glass
is all good and fender skirts on back frame Kelsey Hayes Chromed
wires with knockoff hubs are wrapped in Coker medium white banded
rubber. Certainly, one of the coolest designs to fly out of
Detroit, Michigan.
Interior
A retro style wrap around dual eyebrow dash with medium beige
padded vinyl, is mixed with a wide curving horizontal ribbed
aluminum panel, that contains all the round chromed instruments and
essential knobs and controls. This curving also continues downward
to the center console, where the climate controls are located. This
car is equipped with A/C, and it blows cold. The aluminum continues
back and forms a cigarette station, and then turns to the medium
beige vinyl, and creates a nice storage area and armrest. Medium
beige vinyl covered bucket seats flank the console and are in very
good condition. A flip of the setbacks forward, one finds a
wonderful padded bench stretching from side to side. The headliner
is also in good condition. On the doors more horizontal ribbed
aluminum, and chromed power toggles for the locks and glass. The
original radio was converted to AM/FM/iPod by Retro Radio.
Drivetrain
Under the hood the original 390ci V8 showing like new with
"THUNDERBIRD" emblazoned silver valve covers. On top is a tri power
carburetor that feeds the engine, while not original to the car it
was an available option. Behind is a 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic
automatic transmission, which the consignor states has been rebuilt
due to it leaking and which has now been remedied. A 3.00:1 Ford
9-inch rear axle is installed from the factory. The engine bay is
looking sporty and highly detailed right down to the FoMoCo orange
wiper washer bag. Snazzy!
Undercarriage
Slight surface rust can be seen on some parts underneath; however
it is minor. Unibody seam looks very healthy, as do the floor pans.
Independent coil springs for the front ride provide, and leaf
springs for the back along with power drum brakes all around all
good.
Drive-Ability
A turn of the key and it comes to life instantly. Nice smooth
acceleration, and good bias free braking, along with some snappy
cornering and we have a winner. All functions were working
swimmingly.
An early 1960's suburbia car shows very nicely, and obviously has
been garaged, and well cared for. An interior resembling a clear
fluted glass of Moet en Chandon. A toast to this bullet bird ready
to fly the Classic Auto Mall coop.
