The MG TD was the penultimate edition of the T series whose origins date back to the 1930's. It was a more modern interpretation of the line incorporating independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering. Powered by a 1.3 liter crossflow inline 4 cylinder engine coupled to a 4-speed manual transmission it provided for a spirited open air driving experience. It was also the first left hand drive model produced by MG, whose sights were clearly set on the "sports car crazy" US market. Today, the TD offers classic car enthusiasts with a car that bridges eras in automotive design by retaining a "pre war" look with modern underpinnings. There was little practical purpose offered other than fun.
This 1952 TD has enjoyed long term family ownership. The restoration is older but still presents charmingly well with some well earned patina. Its a solid, rust free example that appears faithful to the original. The leather interior, door cards and carpet all show minimal wear. The vinyl top fits snugly with no nicks or tears. Side curtains are in very good condition. Texas safety inspection is current reflecting "all systems go".
This TD starts right up, rolls off easy and shifts smoothly; steers and stops as it should. Runs cool. After a hard days work this old MG is going to leave some oil on the ground, about average for a car that is in that category of "if it isn't leaking, it isn't running".
This is by no means a fast car in today's sense of the sports car genre, but being behind the wheel of a TD is liberating, so long as you don't mind being waved to and stared at. This is the quintessential Sunday driver; don your beret and scarf and saunter off close quartered with your sweetie into the countryside, sun in your face wind in your hair, the picnic lunch packed in a wicker case strapped to the rack in back. A little rain won't hurt; the top is up in no time and a touch of warm air from the heater keeps things pleasant when the temperature drops.
