Vehicle Description
The Riviera represented the finest in personal luxury Buick had to
offer. From its inception in 1963, the 2-door Riviera had a vast
audience of admirers and enthusiasts. By 1979, the sixth generation
was hitting showrooms with a new front-wheel-drive system, a first
in Buick's long history. It would also introduce the 3.8L Turbo V6
engine option. Sales nearly doubled from its prior year after it
was named Motor Trend's Car of the Year! Originally offered as a
"Turbo" model, it would later change to be called the "T-Type" in
1981, with a convertible Riviera offered for the first time in
1982. You could choose from only two colors options on a
convertible- White or Firemist Red. Either choice came with a red
leather interior as standard.
A minor facelift in the design gave the Riviera a fresh look for
1984, but more importantly was a much-improved turbocharged engine
that also came to the table. It would now feature
computer-controlled ignition and sequential fuel injection,
becoming the most advanced engine offered for the Riviera! And the
most expensive when combined with the convertible option, costing
over $30,000 when brand new! For this reason, they are
exceptionally rare! Of the 500 convertibles available in 1984, only
47 would be ordered with the T-Type turbocharged V6 engine! Many
collectors, even a few on our very own staff, didn't even know they
existed!
Offered here is an exceptionally well kept and maintained 1984
Buick Riviera T-Type Convertible finished in desired Firemist Red
Lacquer over supple Red Leather interior! Features on this
well-equipped Riviera include 4-speed overdrive automatic
transmission, power 4-wheel disc brakes, variable-ratio power
steering, 45/45 front bucket seats with center console,
leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, digital dash with LED tach &
boost gauge, air conditioning; power seats, locks, windows &
outside sport mirror adjustment; cruise control, push button truck
release with power pull down, illuminated passenger vanity mirror,
under hood & trunk lamps, door edge guards, 15" styled aluminum
wheels with Bridgestone 1" whitewall tires, heavy-duty touring
suspension, and a four-note horn!
It comes fully complete with nearly all documentation from brand
new! This includes original owner's manuals & books, delivery
checklist, factory build sheet, maintenance schedule, all original
tire changing equipment with factory spare tire, visor seatbelt
instruction card, shop manuals and all available service records!
It sold new through Jim Kelly Buick based in Fort Wayne, Indiana to
its first owner on February 28th,1984 with a complete Auto Armor
rust prevention system included to preserve this vehicle over the
years. It would remain with this first owner only a short time
before selling to a Cocoa Beach, Florida enthusiast in October 1986
with 18,575 already clocked on the odometer.
This owner would move to Syracuse, Indiana in August 1990, always
maintaining this Riviera in a proper as-is needed fashion through
1995. We have no service records until it lands in a Grand Rapids,
Michigan collection in July 2003. We believe it may have just been
garaged for a number of years. It was used sparingly throughout the
driving season up north before it would sell from a prominent Grand
Rapids, MI dealer in October 2012 with 63,067 miles to a Riviera
enthusiast right here in the southern St. Louis, MO area. Clearly
understanding what he had found and anxious to show it at Riviera
Owners Association events, he made sure it was properly prepped for
the 2013 ROA National Meet in Lexington, Kentucky for the 50th
Anniversary of the Riviera. It would take 1st Place honors in the
Convertible Class!!
The following year, it would once again be treated to a full,
comprehensive servicing before heading to the 30th Anniversary of
the ROA for the June 2014 National Meet in Colorado Springs,
Colorado. It would be honored by receiving the Winner's Circle
Award! Today, the odometer reads just 68,054 miles and it continues
to impress all who see it firsthand! Having been garage kept all
its life, and receiving proper annual care, especially in recent
years, you would be hard-pressed to find a nicer example on the
market! Please act quickly as we can say with some great confidence
that we will not have another one here anytime soon!
