Vehicle Description
1978 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz
Biarritz. / ('b??r?ts, b??'r?ts, French bjarits) / noun. a town in
SW France, on the Bay of Biscay: famous resort, patronized by
Napoleon III and by Queen Victoria and Edward VII of Great Britain
and Ireland.
1978 was the last breaths of the 'big" Eldorado, and this one's
bathed body in Sterling Blue and shows well. It still shines and I
would call this large piece of Detroit iron "super fly"! Nicely
preserved, blue leather interior with more comforts of home
than...well, home, and except for its inability to drive itself,
(which cars of today actually do), you'll be plenty comfy in this
land yacht.
Exterior
Straight rust free large and in charge steel panels adorn this car.
They dance very nicely with big chrome reserved for the grille,
dual square headlight bezels, bumper, and trimmings. A fully padded
landau vinyl padded top sports a vertical opera window and the rear
quarters make the sides for the NYC 2-bedroom apartment sized
trunk. On the back are vertical cathedral style taillights
surrounded by chrome and these surrounds form the rear bumper
seamlessly. Big dog dish wheel coverings with blue accenting and a
Cadillac crest in their centers highlight medium wide white wall
tires with plenty of tread. This car is a real old fashioned BIG
car and there is a lot to love.
Interior
Yards of blue leather cover the "pillow" style seats all complete
with their personal armrests and window toggles on the adjacent
doors as well as the obligatory ashtrays...smoke em if ya got em!
Square buttons also abound and accentuate the pillow tufting going
on with these personal recliners. Plenty of wood grain applique mix
with blue leather and lighter blue carpet to make one think they
are spending a night at the Ritz circa 1978. Options abound such as
cruise control, power antenna, power locks, windows and mirrors,
and the power seats as well as rear window defogger. All this is
neatly packaged into the blue vinyl and wood applique dash. A new
factory Delco stereo with speakers and cassette capabilities is
installed with yellow LED readouts. Also, a factory CB radio
microphone is hanging from the dash and is all operated from this
handset. Bone up on your 10-code talk.
Drivetrain
A big 425ci V8 with a single 4-barrel carburetor is on top. A TH425
3-speed automatic is on the back and 2.73 final drive ratio puts
the power to the ground. This is a front wheel drive car so look
MA! NO HUMP!!
Undercarriage
All good with plenty of undercoating, solid steel and straight
rust-free floor pans. A slight bit of corrosion is noted on some
suspension parts, but front axles, rubber seals and upper and lower
ball joints are appearing in good condition. Power disc brakes
bring this massive luxury liner to a stop.
Drive-Ability
Started right up and idled smoothly, and of course has a cloud like
ride. That suspension combined with the pillowy leather seats, and
you barely know you are moving. It has good acceleration, and the
brakes work great. All power conveniences also work as they
should.
Driving and owning this rare and initially very expensive car, one
can only dream of the original owner and what they did. When in
this all original beauty, you are truly large and in charge. Even
the name Biarritz evokes high cotton.
