Having narrowly escaped extinction during the mid-1950s, General Motors Pontiac division rose to third place in American sales rankings by 1962 and held that position through 1969 with "Wide-Track" swagger and industry-leading performance. The instantly legendary GTO arrived for 1964, combining the mid-size Tempest with a 389 cubic inch powerplant and a wide array of go-fast goodies to captivate Americas fast-growing youth market. Named GTO denoting Gran Turismo Omologato, the new Pontiac took a cheeky swipe at Ferrari's megabuck GT racer of the time.
