1964 was a watershed year for Pontiac and the automotive industry as a whole. Pontiac introduced the GTO, long considered to be the first muscle car, and the US automotive landscape was forever changed. While young enthusiasts flocked to Pontiac showrooms to take an up-close look at the potent new GTO, so did many family guys and older professionals. Everyone, it seemed, was interested in the GTO's performance ability, but not everyone was interested in the GTO itself. For some buyers it was too small, for others it wasn't luxurious enough. And while everyone wanted to experience the new Pontiac excitement, there were those who still craved the handsome Grand Prix.
First introduced in 1962, the Grand Prix refined the car for the 1964 model year to much success with consumers. The car presented a more mature look, but maintained the performance many drivers wanted. The over/under headlights, the twin grille, newly designed rectangular parking and turn signal lamps and "Grand Prix" prominently and proudly displayed. The interior afforded the driver many luxuries and driving comfort. The 389 V8 was standard on these cars, producing the performance sought after by many!
Consigned from an estate, this car presented at auction was subjected to a body on restoration approximately 7 years ago. Body work was completed and new Metallic Burnt Orange paint was applied. The stainless brightwork is in good, original condition and the front and rear bumpers were re-chromed giving the car a nice, crisp look. Both rear fenders may need attention around the wheel wells as referenced in the pictures.
The interior upholstery is extremely nice with brand new seats front and rear, door panels, carpeting and headliner. The rear package tray is new with speakers installed. The dash shows well consistent with the age of the car as minor pitting is present on the interior chrome. The dash components including radio, clock and gas gauge are in need of attention as is the manifold vacuum gauge on the console.
The car is powered by a 389 cu in V8. The engine is topped with an Edelbrock 4bbl Carburetor and is mated to an automatic transmission. A new dual exhaust system, front to back, provides a sound consistent with the sport nature and look of this car. The underneath and chassis are unrestored, with drum brakes all around. Please note the pictures of the underneath void of undercoating. This is a solid car having benefited from being in a dry climate.
