This exceedingly cool 1957 Speedster replica definitely turns
heads! When you drive it others assume it's a real Speedster since
everyone knows replicas are either shiny or have big flared
fenders. LOL. The patina paint was achieved with an iron oxide
paste which was applied to the body. Chemically this substance
actually is rust, but of course fiberglass doesn't rust. The frame
and floor pan are in excellent rust free condition. In addition to
the fake rust the look is further enhanced by several original
Porsche 356 parts. This includes an original 356-clock, original
luggage rack, original rear bumperettes, vintage Bilstein jack and
original torsion bar adjustment covers. It has replica 356 gauges
as well as period dual stop watches, fog lamps, genuine vintage
German license tag, replica Porsche Nardi style steering wheel, a
hand pumped fire extinguisher and a few other bits. Additional
nostalgia is provided via a remote starter push button and dual
tone air horns.
The interior has an aged but not ratty appearance. The upholstery
on one seat is torn, but otherwise it is in generally good used
condition. The convertible top assembly and side curtains are
included. They are in good serviceable condition.
Mechanically the car receives the benefit of four-wheel disc brakes
courtesy of an EMPI kit. The engine is supposed to be a dual port
super beetle engine but this has not been confirmed. Previous owner
states he changed the clutch and ignition components within a few
hundred miles of sale.
It was built from a Classic Motor Carriages kit, but I'm not sure
when it was assembled. It is very fun to drive and it's low stance,
grippy tires and four-wheel disc brakes make it a nice backroad
performer. Not sure of the ratios in the transmission, but it is
comfortable at highway speeds. The Speedster is an absolute hoot.
It is enjoyable and does not take itself too seriously. The build
quality is good and the overall effect is fantastic, but do not
mistake this for an expensive ultra high-end build.
If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind toy you should seriously
consider this speedster replica
