This 1968 BMW 1600 GT was first delivered to Autohaus Krah & Enders in Fulda, Germany and was refurbished by Oldenzaal Classics in the Netherlands in approximately 2019 prior to its importation to the US. The body was refinished in Granada Red, the black interior was reupholstered, the suspension and braking systems were overhauled, and the numbers-matching 1.6-liter M10 inline-four and four-speed manual transmission were both rebuilt. Features include 14? wheels finished in chrome with Roundel hubcaps, front disc brakes, a perforated headliner, VDO gauges, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and Grundig radio.
This 1600 GT is now offered on dealer consignment with a certificate from BMW Classic and a clean California title.
The GT coupe was introduced by Hans Glas GmbH at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show, and it features a fastback design penned by the Italian firm Frua and built by Maggiora in Italy. BMW purchased Glas’ operations in 1966 and incorporated the GT model into their production run through 1968, with revisions including a BMW powertrain and badging. This example was delivered new in Turf (073) and is said to have been refinished in Granada Red (023) following bodywork performed by Oldenzaal Classics of the Netherlands in approximately 2019. Additional work performed at that time included re-chroming the bumpers, refinishing the wiper arms and window trim, and replacement of badging, lenses, lights, weather seals, and rain gutter and door sill trim components. The paintwork and exterior trim are shown up close in the photo gallery below.
Steel 14? wheels with chrome-finished hubcaps wearing Roundels were refinished in 2019, at which time 175/70 Goodyear GT3 tires were mounted. The braking and suspension systems were also overhauled during the refurbishment, which is said to include the following:
The interior was retrimmed with black vinyl upholstery covering the front bucket seats and rear bench, and the ribbed inserts are perforated on the front seats. Peppered gray carpeting lines the floors as well as the trunk, and a perforated white headliner was fitted. A Grundig radio is mounted in the center of the padded dashboard, the latter of which was also reupholstered in black vinyl along with the door panels.
The three-spoke steering wheel with a wooden rim sits ahead of chrome-trimmed VDO instrumentation that includes a 7k-rpm tachometer, a 230-km/h speedometer, and four auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 62k kilometers (~39k miles). True mileage is unknown.
The 1.6-liter M10 inline-four features replacement dual Weber 40 DCOE 151 carburetors fed through an airbox that was powder-coated black during the refurbishment. Additional work performed during the refurbishment is said to include the following:
Engine stamping W001934 is shown above and matches the serial number of the car as well as the numbers shown on the certificate from BMW Classic below.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission that was rebuilt during the refurbishment, at which time the driveshaft was also rebuilt and the clutch components and driveshaft bearings were replaced. Additional photos of the underside are presented in the gallery.
The BMW Classic certificate lists the production date, original color, engine and chassis numbers, and a manufacture date of May 28, 1968 as well as delivery to Autohaus Krah & Enders in Fulda, Germany.
