Is the secret to Jaguar's broad appeal it's ability to seemingly roar and purr at the same time?
The XJ-S had big boots to fill. It's XKE predecessor was universally lauded for its performance on the road and the race track, worshipped for its beauty and remains to this day an icon in automotive history. By 1974 the XKE was stretched, weighed down with safety features and slowed down by emissions controls. Its cramped quarters had lost its appeal. Jaguar, to remain relevant needed a new platform for its halo offering. Now, in retrospect, the XJ-S was a smashing success.
The Big Cat skewed more towards grand touring than racing but enjoyed plenty of success on the track. This gen-2 1987 XJ-S V12 Coupe is a fine example. Unrestored, with only 63k original miles it is a two owner car that has received all the documented maintenance it has ever needed including recent fuel lines and AC service. This car runs out excellent and looks the part in steel gray and leather interior. Most everything is in working order; it starts right up, shifts smoothly and the faster you roll it down the road the more settled it becomes. Fresh tires and brakes make it ready for whatever you put in front of it.
The original paint, bright work, glass, rubber, seating surfaces and carpeting are all in great condition. This is a true survivor. Something you would expect from a car that has never seen a salted road or extended time outside of a garage. These cars have languished on the resale market, but good ones like this are trending upwards. Buy this car at the very fair asking price, take care of it and enjoy it and you will likely never lose money on it should the need to sell it arise. Drive it for a while and rest assured you will find every excuse in the world to keep it.
