GR Auto Gallery is pleased to offer this exciting 2014 BMW i3 for
your consideration. At first glance one will instantly recognize
this is not your ordinary BMW. It is one of the first two models in
BMW's new environmentally friendly "i" sub-brand. Because BMW
designated the i3 as separate from the standard BMW line-up, it
granted the designers and engineers free reign to produce an all
around well balanced electric vehicle.
The BMW i3's design is very unique but what makes this vehicle
stand out even further is the advanced technology that BMW packed
under the surface. The mechanical undercarriage and battery housing
are made of lightweight aluminum while the upper body structure is
carbon fiber. Carbon fiber can be seen on the door sills and on the
black roof and is the same stuff that professional race car teams
and hypercar manufacturers make their vehicles out of. Not only did
this provide a great marketing point for BMW to sell the i3, it
more importantly reduced the weight of the vehicle drastically
which then reduces the electricity bill needed to power the
vehicle.
BMW stayed true to their fundamentals during the production of the
i3. It is rear wheel drive, has a controlled ride, and tight
handling. Power is provided by the 170 horsepower electric motor
that has an EPA estimated 81 miles of range. This example was
optioned with the Range Extender option which added a small gas
powered engine that acts as a generator to nearly double the range
of the standard i3.
The lightweight construction allows for quick acceleration and with
a 50/50 weight distribution and BMW suspension the i3 is an
absolute blast to drive. The cabin is undoubtedly futuristic
looking. It uses a plethora of recycled materials, a
"free-floating" steering column, and full digital gauges and
infotainment system. Just because this is an electric car don't
think that BMW skipped out on loading the i3 up with comfort
options. It has air conditioning, power windows, power locks,
keyless entry, and heated seats as one would expect from a 2010s
BMW vehicle.
When the i3 was initially released there were not any alternatives
for a fun to drive electric vehicle with the exception of the much
larger Tesla Model S. Since then there have been a few more models
released that fill the need for fun-to-drive electric vehicles but
that does not take away from the joyful driving experience the i3
