1981-1993 was the first generation of Dodge Ram pickup trucks.
Dodge had technically been producing trucks since 1917, but their
1981 pickups were the first ones to sport the Ram name. In order to
signify this, Dodge slapped a ram's head hood ornament on the
trucks after Lee Iacocca, Chrysler's President and CEO at the time,
decided it was a good mascot. Fun fact: the ram's head logo was
first used in 1933 to represent the trucks and rugged vehicles made
by Dodge but was no longer used after 1950. So, Iacocca's decision
in 1981 to resurrect the ram could actually be considered a vintage
throwback.
For consignment, a RAM LE 250. A one family owned car where a
father passed it down to his son, and now with a mere 12,850 actual
miles is here for the taking but you'd better get here sooner
rather than later because I have a sneaky suspicion that it will be
out the door this way...sooner rather than later.
Exterior
Bathed in Medium Suede tan painted steel panels which are very
straight and have well minded gaps and seams. This is seen on the
upper and lower parts of the truck. In the middle Dark Suede brown
is looking good and shiny especially since it is the original
paint! No rust within miles of this truck, and all trimmings are
very shiny and straight with nary even the beginnings of any
dimpling or fading. The front grille with a single headlight on
either side uses square and rectangle design, the standard of the
80's and early 90's. Simplified, yet sophisticated, the grille is
well preserved, as is the bumper below. In the mid section of the
fenders, doors and bed is a trim piece which is a wide black
plastic textured bar, with thin chrome bands on either side. These
trims line up near perfectly when you eye the sides from front to
rear. The doors are straight and close with a quality thud, and
sport large chrome mirrors on either side. The long 8 foot bed is
wonderfully straight on the sides, has more of that black and
chrome molding, a wheel well surrounded by bling. Hanging from
either side under the doors are aftermarket running boards which
are straight and shiny. The bed is lined with a tuff textured
plastic liner and this shows up on the gate as well. The rear
exterior of the gate gate is looking like new as the diamond plate
pattern chromed bumper below. Standard 16-inch wheels are wrapped
in black wall rubber from 1999.
Interior
Almond broadcloth in a tweed pattern is seen on the bench which is
nearly new and stretching the width of the cab. The edges have
brown bolsters which are smooth vinyl. These seats are like new, as
the fronting dash, which is all original design, has wood applique
panels and a trio of gauges in the round in front of the original
wheel. Power windows, and power lock toggles are added to the nice
door panels and are seen in black molded plastic. These panels
float in a sea covered in fuzzy tan broadcloth in the mid sections,
and molded darker tan plastic on the surrounds. A/C has been
factory installed, and nice golden tinted tan carpet floods the
floors and looks like it just drove off the showroom floor. An
AM/FM/Cassette with blue digital readout, and a toggle to control
the balance and treble is neatly within the dash as well.
Drivetrain
Within the tan painted engine bay is more candy in 318ci V8 form
with EFI on top feeding it. Strapped to the back of this original
mill is an A500 4-speed automatic transmission, and an 8-3/4 3.23
rear. Spin the tires and let's go to the undercarriage!
Undercarriage
All buttoned up underneath with a solid frame to hold like new
rotors and drums, brake lines and hoses, and fuel tank between the
frame for extra protection. Independent front suspension with coil
springs is upfront, and on back are tough leaf springs with
certainly no rust. Rockers are all solid, and engine and
transmission pans do not have a lick of any fluid leaks.
Drive-Ability
This truck is absolutely like new and fired right up. It was off to
the test track where it handled very nicely, and came to a straight
stop, quickly. The EFI instantly brings this mill to life and the
power just goes on and on. A real hauler with serious power, solid
acceleration and smooth cruise at highway speed with little effort.
A smooth ride for a truck as well. The A/C did not blow cold, but
all else is near perfection.
You will have to look really close to find a fault in this truck,
and also look far and wide to find another one in as good of
condition. Real straight body panels, a clean bed, snappy trimmings
and a wide stripe, along with the bed liner, and don't forget that
low low mileage. A popular year for the design all led by a big ram
hood ornament living up to built RAM tough!
