Vehicle Description
1987 Cadillac Allante Roadster
The Cadillac Allante is a two-door, two-seater luxury roadster
produced by Cadillac from 1987 until 1993. It used a Cadillac
chassis and running gear with a body built in Italy by coach
builder Pininfarina. It was expensive to produce with the complete
bodies flown to Detroit for final assembly. Over 21,000 were built
during its seven-year production run.
Offered for consignment, the first year of production of this model
Cadillac, which was available only in convertible form. A front
wheel drive V8 is crammed in under the hood, and in 1987 this was
the first Cadillac roadster since the 355 series of the mid
1930's
Exterior
A decent coating of maroon covers the exterior of this steel
paneled car. Three inches of front fascia spoiler enhances
high-speed aerodynamics while independent wing windows give a
throwback to days of yore. A long front hood shows in good
condition. Door gaps are within good tolerances, and steel panels
are straight and true. A headlight washer system is noted, as well
as a used condition but clean trunk. Black molded vinyl surrounds
the bottom of this car, and shows slight fading, as do the fold
away rear-view mirrors. 16 Inch cast aluminum wheels are seen all
around. The contrasting black hardtop adds a nice touch.
Interior
Red leather-trimmed bucket seats orthopedically designed to provide
optimal support and comfort are seen when opening the door. The
seats have power six-way metaphoric adjustments and are showing
with slight wear but remain very nice. The driver's bucket has some
loose leather in the seat. They flank a center console equipped
with a transmission shift selector that is slightly offset 20
degrees toward the driver for ease of shifting. Leather stitching
on the door panels as well as nicely molded contrasting vinyl make
up the door panels. Power window, seat adjustment, and power locks
are a few of the buttons seen in the door armrest area. The dash is
all electronic readouts and a "tower" if you will, is sitting to
the right of the dash and houses the climate controls, radio and CD
player, and trip computer which also displays driver
information.
Drivetrain
Opening the hood we are met with a transverse mounted 4.1 L 4100HT
V8 making a tire turning 170hp and paired to a THMF7 4-speed
automatic transmission. A 2.95 ratio final drive puts power to the
pavement.
Undercarriage
Presenting nicely with only minor surface rust on the suspension
members but all else is rust free. Structurally sound and featuring
4 wheel strut based independent suspension on the corners along
with 4 wheel power brakes this car will handle. Stock style exhaust
handles the spent fossils and is in good condition.
Drive-Ability
Nicely appointed in Cadillac style, this 2-seater venture ran a
little rough with a pronounced engine miss so we kept our drive
short. The hardtop would not release, so there was no open air
motoring and we noticed that the Low Battery Voltage warning light
was on.
A luxurious toy could best describe this small but near muscle
horsepower Caddy. A status symbol in its day just begging for
someone to bring it back to glory, but all the parts are there and
there is no tinworm to worry about.
