In 1980, Mercedes-Benz revamped its SL lineup of sporting luxury
convertibles with the introduction of the 380SL. similar to its
earlier cousins the 380SL was a heady mix of V-8 power, refined
luxury, and sporty underpinnings. It was as a very popular model
during its run in the U.S.The 380SL, featured a 3.8-liter V-8 power
plant. Despite having a smaller engine than the 450SL it was
designed with emission control in mind, unlike the 450. This
resulted in the two engines being almost equal in power (155 hp in
the 380SL vs. 160 hp in the 450SL). Performance and fuel economy
were similar for the two cars. The 380SL received a new four-speed
automatic transmission, which improved longer distance driving.
Fully independent suspension remained the same and four-wheel disc
brakes remained standard.1985 was the last year for the 380SL, to
be replaced by the 560SL in 1986. The 380SL has become a popular,
more affordable alternative for collectors of the classic Mercedes
80's roadster lineup. This example was originally purchased by the
previous owner and maintained for 35 years. As the couple became
older and drove it less, the current owner, a family friend,
purchased it and performed the necessary mechanicals, bringing it
back to its current well-maintained condition. The car includes the
optional hardtop as well. A full list of repairs and maintenance
performed is available by request. This vehicle is located in
