Vehicle Description
This 1980 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is one of the rare years of the
turbocharged V8. So while you'll love the T-tops, extra features,
and highly original red-on-red style, you know it's the idea of
having a rare bird with a numbers-matching turbo heart that is most
appealing.
The Turbo Trans Ams are a rarity that were only around for a couple
of years. They carry the same pieces of all the best T/As, like the
wide body kit, fender vents, and integrated rear spoiler. But they
also have some unique elements. For example, it's easy to identify
them because of the special wheel design that was only shared with
the 10th anniversary cars. And these shining alloys are especially
easy to see against a car with such vibrant color. The code-72
Francisco Red is believed to be the factory application. While it's
unknown if the odometer represents the car's full mileage, it does
show a level of care in its completeness that is desirable after
more than four decades. You may give it a professional detail to
really make it pop at the car shows, and we can understand why.
This one is ready to be shown off a new graphics package that
brings added attention to the iconic hood bird. And it's extra cool
how it breathes its fire right over the special offset hood dome
that's a hallmark of these turbo cars. So it all makes for a very
stock-style package on a distinct classic.
The interior is a highly stock setup that looks terrific. We
especially like the hobnail pattern on the cloth seats. Not only is
it a classic Pontiac piece, but fabric means it's much nicer to hop
in on a sunny day. After all, this is a T-top coupe. They are a
great factory feature, and the factory storage bags are just
another clue to the level of care that has gone into this car over
the years. There are great features, like power windows, an armrest
center console, a tilt steering column, and the full gauges w/tach
and clock combo. This also has a few well-integrated upgrades like
power locks, the Kenwood AM/FM digital stereo w/cassette, and the
factory air conditioning which has been converted to modern R134a
(but will need servicing to blow cold again.) And while the full
red package has an aggressive attitude, it's only heightened by
Pontiac's machine-turned panels around the shifter and dash.
Lift the hood for a very unique presentation. The 4.9-liter
turbocharged V8 motor can be instantly identified in this setup
with the offset air topper that makes room for the turbocharger. On
a car so well preserved thus far, you'll be glad to know that this
very correct-looking engine bay also contains the original
numbers-matching motor. More than just historical, this is a
well-maintained package that runs smoothly. These unique T/As were
a cool addition to the lineup when the big torque of the V8 would
get you off the line and the turbo offered an extra hit of power in
the mid-range. Plus, Trans Ams are fun to drive thanks to good
handling. Add in power steering, power brakes, front discs, and
TH350 three-speed automatic transmission, and you've got a terrific
total cruising package.
