Vehicle Description
1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7
It's restless, civilized, challenging, serene.. It's a Cougar, and
it's like nobody else's car. Queue Farrah Fawcett to hug the cat on
the roof! "The Sign of the Cat" was the ad slogan that brought
Mercury back to life in the late 1960's
For consignment, an original survivor, sporting its original paint.
Over its career, it has been in the same family. This car has had a
mechanical total rebuild of the engine up in 1998, and since has
seen low miles. Time to grab this car by the tail and have some
excitement come your way!
Exterior
The Cougar is quite different from the Mustang in the realm of
styling. Most noticeable was the front end "electric shaver" split
grille treatment with concealed headlights. At the rear, it came
with T-Bird sequential taillights. Dark Ivy Green covers the panels
which show some usage, and fading as well as runoff, but consistent
for its age. A few scratches and some surface rust is noted on the
door sills next to the trim. A white vinyl top now aged a fine
color of creme is good save for a seam on the rear B pillar near
the window cracking off some of the vinyl. Chrome bumpers and all
trim retains its shine and shows very little wear. Dual exhaust
with chromed tips peek out the back at the bottom of the chassis.
Mercury 14-inch styled steel wheels with a blue cougar badge on the
hub, are wrapped in BFG Raised white lettering radial T/A's. Cue
the cat growling.
Interior
Swinging one of the two doors open we are met with 2 sporty saddle
leather covered wide tuck and roll buckets with accompanying
headrests. In back is a matching bench stretching across to
vertical ribbed tuck and roll leather covered panels. This holds
true for the doors as well which are in very nice condition. This
car sports the XR-7 package, which was introduced in January of
1967. Much was made of the Cougar's Euro theme and the XR-7
accentuated this. The dash was covered with burled walnut applique.
In front of the steering wheel within full view of the pilot, a
lineup of 4 round gauges 2 of which are a speedometer and a
tachometer and the others being warning light clusters and fuel
indicator. This applique panel is within a stitched black leather
dash top and front which is in very good condition. Below is
another beige horizontal panel that has a few knobs and the
ignition. In the center dash is a cascade of black leather and more
wood applique. Underneath the radio on the XR-7 are the temp
sliders just above the floor. Adding to the European flair, was a
row of Jaguar style toggle switches above the center vents which
controls various interior lights. In front of the passenger is an
oval panel wood applique dash front which has an inset clock. Below
is a beige covered glovebox. Headliner is beige and vinyl and
tight, and the carpeting is green and very original looking. I'm
running my paws and nails through this stuff.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a very clean engine bay and shows nicely. In its
center is the star in the form of a blue block and intake 428 Cobra
Jet V8 which is original to this car. It is topped with a 4-barrel
carburetor, and a surrounding chrome air cleaner covering. Valve
covers are also chromed and nice and shiny. On the back is a
4-speed manual transmission and is a Toploader. On the back is a
Ford 9-inch 3.50 Equalock rear axle. One wild cat and a beauty to
boot.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is seen, particularly around what appears to be a
new fuel tank. As we move forward this rust mostly clears up and we
see some spotty surface rust on the floor pans and framing, along
with road dirt on the frame. We do see invasive rust on the
driver's front unibody rail at the torque box. The torque box is
partially separated and is showing severe rusting of the rail at
the attachment points. Some surface rust is seen in mid car on the
rockers. Dual turbo exhaust is on and power disc brakes for the
front, and power drums for the rear.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and very smooth runner with acceleration aplenty
just push foot further to floor. Bias free braking, and good
handling make this a luxury muscle car much more upscale than the
Mustang, and more powerful.
A true survivor, 1 family owned throughout its lifetime, a complete
engine rebuild which still is working wonderfully and looking
great. Showing a little age but in good overall condition. Also
plenty of paperwork for this cool cat to include a Marti Report,
Original Window Sticker, original Warranty card, Original Owners
Manual and a complete set of Ford shop manuals. 2 boxes of extra
parts including original carburetor and diff tags
