Vehicle Description
1954 Chevrolet 3100 1/2 Ton
There's just something about old school pickups that's universally
appealing. To us, they're clean, straightforward work vehicles
which have morphed into wildly popular classics. And it seems many
enthusiasts agree, as trucks like this original Chevy are some of
our hottest sellers...because they are trucks!
For consignment and your enjoyment, a very nicely restored
Chevrolet 3100 Series 1/2 ton pickup, retaining its original
styling just as it was on the showroom floor 66 years ago. The
advanced design from Chevrolet was billed as stronger, larger and
sleeker, and the first redesign since WW2. This truck is a short
wheelbase 1/2 ton 3100. It is a 2002 AACA National Award winner in
the senior division.
Exterior
Bathed in well done Transport Blue, there is barely a flaw to be
found, or gap out of line on this truck. Originality was the
restorers key, and it has it from the front grille including a
triple row of large horizontal grille bars bisected by a vertical
bar, with parking lights incorporated in the grille (Incidentally,
these interchanged with the corresponding GMC model). The new
grille could be ordered in chrome, but because this cost extra, it
is seldom seen on surviving trucks. On painted grilles, the outer
bars were painted in the body color; the inner bars are painted the
correct thistle gray. Black bumpers in front and rear finish off
this 3100 at either end. All the way through the bed which is lined
with near perfect oak. Due to the curved fenders being on the
outside, you get a full unobstructed bed, (why weren't they doing
this all along? GENIUS!). Wide white wall tires are wrapping black
wheels with blue bowtie badged moon caps in their centers. For work
only on this great example, although it is quite the shower!
Interior
Sprayed in warm cream color we can call it taupe, the full metal
dash with its pristine original gauge setup, simple vertical ribbed
front and center, restored steering wheel side column mounted
shifter, and we are speaking utilitarian bling if you will. Door
panels do not disappoint either with the taupe lowers in horizontal
ribbed metal and brown vinyl uppers. A large bench stretches from
metal door to metal door and is found brown vinyl. This bench has
seat belts. The back rectangle window is framed inside by pure
metal and is sprayed with the door and dash taupe. True to form the
floors are near perfect black rubber and above is a brown vinyl
paneled headliner with chromed separators. Buckle up buttercup!
Drivetrain
Opening the massive hood, we are met with a 235ci inline 6-cylinder
engine, which is very clean and matches the quality of the rest of
the truck. It sits in a very clean engine bay, has a 1-barrel
carburetor with an oil bath air cleaner attached to the top.
Backing this 112hp engine is a 3-speed manual transmission, that
shifts very smoothly, and throws power to a 3.90 rear axle.
Undercarriage
Appearing original but from the '91 restoration, is now covered
with a wonderful patina of faded paint, and very minor surface rust
here and there. Structurally sound it takes on the appearance of
what a beautifully aged undercarriage would over time, but time
well spent in a garage or dry barn. New floorboards were installed.
Leaf springs provide the ride for you and the haul and are on all 4
corners. Also, drum brakes are on these corners.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, smooth idle, and easy shifting through the 3 gears
of the manual transmission are noticed right away. Suspension felt
nice and tight with no sloppy ride lumbering around curves here,
this truck is a performer and a head turner as well.
Overall a wonderful restoration retaining the original
undercarriage, and meticulous attention to the above appearance.
Mechanically sound, this truck works very well on all fronts, and
runs like it's 1954 all over again, and we just left the lot with a
smile on our face.
