This 1968 Ford Fairlane 500 is a legacy kind of car. It's a sedan
with a high degree of originality, right down to the finish. It
makes for the kind of cool-cruising V8 sedan we don't see too often
anymore.
The 1968 car was one of our favorites. Ford has given its
intermediate sedans a more substantial presence a couple of years
prior, and then they refreshed it for '68 with horizontal quad
headlights that made these look even wider. The body design had a
bit more of a kick-up at the rear, which gave it a sportier
personality. Overall, this Fairlane was arguably one of Ford's most
attractive designs of the 1960s, because it offered an elegant
simplicity that had a hint of European influence. And this
legendary Ford design was also finished in a legendary Ford color:
Wimbledon White. This is believed to be the original application,
and the shine it retains is quite amazing for over a half-century
later. It's got all the best classic pieces, like wraparound chrome
bumpers, factory wheel covers, and even the dealer ID on the trunk
lid. Plus, the full-length trim has a distinct red insert for added
stylish flair.
The black interior has a tasteful look against the white exterior,
and the red floor mats are a nice little touch to go with the
exterior accenting. The presentation is highly original, and it has
the right comfort to comfortably fit family and friends in this
sedan. Plus, the higher trim on the 500 series means some great
wood applique and stylish trim on the seats. And there are great
classic features like the working Philco AM radio and provisions
for air conditioning (it will need servicing to blow cold again.)
The classic steering wheel has an artful style, and we especially
like the look of the gauges. Those round pods give us another
little hint of European influence.
This sedan was optioned with Ford's F-code 302 cubic-inch V8 motor.
It has such an honest presentation today that we have no trouble
believing this could be the original powerplant. And when you add
in the three-speed automatic transmission, power steering, power
brakes, and modern cruising tires, you get the right kind of
classic that upholds a sedan's expectations for an easy driving
experience.
This Fairlane is a very vintage package that also keeps a ton of
modern appeal. Are you ready to carry on its legacy? Call
