1966 M151A1 Jeep
VIN: 2928778
In 1951, Ford Motor Company was awarded a contract to design a 1/4 ton truck to replace the World War II era Jeeps. The vehicle was designed through the 1950s, with Ford producing the M151 for military only use. The M151A1 MUTT, or Military Unit Tactical Truck, first put into service during the Vietnam War, was the principal combat jeep and played a part in American military operations well into the 1980s.
The newly designed M151, replacing the M38 and M38A1, utilized an integrated frame design allowing for more ground clearance as well as a slightly larger vehicle in size but retaining the same basic weight. In addition, the new vehicle was equipped with independent suspension and coil springs. This made the M151 capable of high speed, cross country travel with better maneuverability and agility.
But unlike other military vehicles such as the WWII jeeps, the M151 was never widely released into the civilian market. Many of the M151A1 vehicles that served in Vietnam were destroyed, having been cut up and dumped in rivers and the ocean. However, a limited number of MUTTS did find their way into civilian use. The MUTT presented at auction features:
- Complete restoration in 2019-2020
- Restored to original specifications
- 50 Caliber Mounted Machine Gun
- Restored Ammunition Trailer
- Original radios dismounted, but available with the MUTT
- Good Running and Driving Vietnam Era Vehicle
