The lead car for the 6th Generation Impala by General Motors, the 1977 Impala, was named Motor Trends Car of the Year for 1977. Although the downsized Impalas were shorter in length, the car sported increased rear seat legroom, increased head room and a larger trunk. Chevrolet regained the number one sales position in the full-size automobile market with the 1977 Impala.
