Vehicle Description
Here's a 1966 Oldsmobile F85 Deluxe with a big V8 upgrade, striking
style, and a well-done A/C interior. It makes for a full package
that lets this hardtop be equal parts powerful and stylish...which
is the heart of a true Oldsmobile.
Olds kept pouting substance into the F85 line, and so by 1966 it
was an intermediate-sized car with significant style. The
wraparound chrome bumpers cleanly integrate into the extra-wide
front and rear panels; the sporty silhouette of the hardtop design;
the flying buttress rear pillars; and sheet metal that has a sporty
kick-up integrated into the rear fender. This is '60s styling at
its best, and you see it perfectly in a coupe treated correctly
where the panel line up well and the doors still shut with
authority. But there's much more going on there than an iconic
classic design. The red paint takes part of the factory-correct
color and then upgrades it with a metallic respray. So this one
wants to get noticed for a bolder style. And that added luster
seems to draw added attention to the huge power bulge. Plus,
17-inch American Racing Torq Thrust wheels give this an upgraded
performance stance.
The black interior looks great against the red exterior. It also
looks particularly nice because you can see there was a solid
investment there. Newer carpeting, a smooth dash, and custom seat
upholstery with white stitching that matches the headliner give
this a thoughtful look.
There are upgraded features like an AM/FM stereo with iPod input
and R134a air conditioning (may need a recharge to be ideally
cold.) There are even good classic details, including the wood-like
trim and vintage steering wheel. While this is all quite
comfortable, the B&M floor shifter, auxiliary gauge trio, and
large tach on the steering column are all upgrades that signal
there's something fun under the hood.
Nothing beats the look of a golden Olds block radiating within a
tidy black engine bay. The big 455 cubic-inch V8 is already larger
than what was being offered in '66, and this one has been upgraded
further with a Holley four-barrel carburetor and upgraded intake.
And you have the right supporting components, too, like an MSD
ignition and an aluminum radiator. It all has the look of a more
recent solid investment, and the way this V8 fires up and runs
reaffirms the feeling of good care. The TH400 three-speed automatic
transmission is a stout unit, and this one is said to also have a
2000 stall. It feeds a strong 12-bolt 3.07 rear end with
Positraction. Power steering, power brakes, front discs, a rear
sway bar, and modern sport tires are all part of a total package
built for performance and control.
