Vehicle Description
This 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone GT is a restored drop-top classic
that has been given the right investments to be equal parts power
and poise. So check out everything from the custom interior to the
big 390 V8, and soon you'll realize this is the full package
classic that loves to let the sunshine in.
This was the most expensive car of the Comet series, and so it's
rare with only about 2,160 produced in 1966. So just imagine how
few have survived 55 years to still look this good. Of course, this
presentation comes from a ton of care and investment. We have build
receipts documenting two restorations. The first was a multi-year
project that concluded around 2012 and cost around $38k. Then there
was another $10k spent in 2020-2021 just to refresh the car. The
result is a quality overall style. And since this is a real-deal
GT, it also has a ton of sporty style. It starts up front with the
correct dual scoop hood. And you also have stacked headlights, hood
pins, and dual wide grilles, it really puts an imposing face
forward. The Highland Green paint was a terrific upgrade that will
make you think about the Bullitt Mustang. Plus, the triple rocker
stripe and new/bright Mag 500 wheels give this the right look you
want in a powerful product from the Ford Motor Company.
The newer tan folding top has a sophisticated style against the
deep green paint. It shows that no matter how much power this one
has, it's also still a premium Mercury. This feeling only gets
intensified when you flip the switch and power the roof down.
That's because you have an awesome custom interior. The seats are
finished in a two-tone tan with comfy cloth inserts, and the door
panels are done to match. The carpeting feels fresh, and the custom
dash pad is supple. Plus, you'll love the details, like the cyclone
stitching on the seatbacks, coordinating convertible boot cover, a
classic AM radio on display, and color-matched seatbelts. And while
this has a thoughtful look, you'll also appreciate how it's a
proper driver's classic. You have bucket seats up front and a
center console in-between. There's an upgraded sports steering
wheel, and it's mounted on an upgraded tilt column to give you a
clear view of the full gauge panel.
The Cyclone GT is not only desirable for its rarity but also its
power. These came stock with a 390 cubic-inch V8, and an S-code car
like this was the top-dog of them all. So it's great to have a
year-correct block that's believed to be this car's original
powerhouse. The larger restoration budget included rebuilding this
motor, including the internals, like the bearings and camshaft.
Plus, they upgraded it for more muscle with a Holley four-barrel
carburetor, Edelbrock aluminum intake, and long tube headers
feeding the dual exhaust. It's a string V8 package that loves to
run. But as a true Mercury, this GT can also cruise with ease.
That's why you have a three-speed automatic transmission, power
steering, power brakes, and front discs.
