Vehicle Description
1957 Chevrolet Bel Air
The Chevrolet Bel Air is one of the most recognized and beloved
classics of all time. Its clean lines, tasteful trim and excellent
proportions make for the 1957 version to be a favorite of the
Tri-Five fan. The fins were just right, grille proportions correct,
and it is undoubtedly the most desirable of the group.
For consignment the highest end car offered in the Tri-Five lineup
was the Chevrolet Bel Air. This year it was felt that it hit its
mark right on the bullseye with the shapes and proportions. A clean
interior and snappy two-tone white over black paint your chance to
get into the Tri Five era on a budget.
Exterior
With Onyx Black bathing the body panels, we note several areas of
chipping and scrapes. Mostly straight panels and good gaps abound
on this slab sided icon. On the doors in particular there is some
rust bubbling on the inside of each door bottom. White paint is
seen on the top and has some faults as to fading and minor
staining. Chrome is showing areas of fading but is rust free. Trim
work is mostly bright and shiny and present well. 14" wide whites
are all around and standard wheel covers are present. A shout out
to the trunk which appears original and retains its decal and trunk
mat.
Interior
The seating upholstery appears original with silver vinyl bolsters
and black metallic pattern cloth inserts, we are in the 1950's. The
dash appears to have the original gauges and steering wheel and we
can call it patina finish. The door panels are black with silver
and show some wear on the handles and a few faults, mostly
unremarkable. A radio delete panel is also noted in the dash. Black
carpet floods the floors and is showing some wear and fading while
a tannish yellow cloth headliner hangs above.
Drivetrain
An orange engine block resides in this patina engine bay and is
topped with a red valve cover. An oil bath air cleaner tops the 1
bbl carburetor. A 3-speed manual is on the back of the and at the
rear is a 3.70 geared axle.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is noted underneath, body hangers are good as
well as the rockers and the frame. Leaf springs and independent
coil spring suspension give the ride rear and front. Drum brakes
are all around and a single exhaust system is seen.
Drive-Ability
The car started instantly and came into a nice smooth idle.
However, we couldn't drive the car due to the brakes not working.
All other functions were working at the time of our test.
An iconic Chevrolet design and considered the best of the Tri-Five
era which is in need of some TLC on the braking end. The car runs
well, and the interior remains nice despite being original. A few
dents and dings, some rust bubbling, however a car for someone who
wants to spend some time in the restoration area project arena.
