Vehicle Description
This is your very rare opportunity at a distinguished pre-war car
that's ready to leave here on a Saturday and win awards on that
Sunday. This 1934 Hupmobile Coupe is a memorable design that
showcases a true vintage spirit, right down to the rumble seat.
The W-417 coupes are a fun story. They look a bit like a Ford,
because Murray built coupes for both Ford and Hupmobile. But the
latter got a touch of the premium, and it starts with the color
package. After all, you could consider this a beige and black
two-tone, and the gloss of the finish loves to highlight the curves
of the smooth steel body. But really there's a third paint, too.
The tasteful brown seems to act almost like brightwork trim as it
highlights the full-length body crease, accents the windows, and
it's even a pinstripe for the color-matched wire wheels. And there
are more premium details, like the way the waterfall grille curves
at the bottom, and the well-coordinated look of the full-size spare
wheel cover on the rear. So while the body is ford based, the
details like the vinyl roof, padded running boards, and mirror-like
chrome bumpers all make this Hupmobile look like a Cadillac.
Suicide doors always look cool, and they are your gateway to a
well-done interior. This was restored in the 1980s, and so you have
a nice sense of style that hasn't been over-done for modern
convenience. That means a classic button-top bench seat finished in
a comfy velour. The door panels, sail panels, and headliner all
coordinate. Plus, carpeting, a smooth dash, and detailed gauges
with the Hupmobile logo at the center are all part of this quality
classic feeling. Not only do you have roll-down side windows, but
also a pop-out windshield for venting. Plus, that open rear window
is a terrific pairing with the rumble seat. It was reupholstered in
durable vinyl with the same button-top look as the front, and so it
makes for a quality presentation of this hallmark item.
More of this coupe's distinction is under the hood. It has the
correct 224 cubic-inch inline-six. The presentation is so clean and
correct you can see the declaration of "heat treated chrome nickel
alloy" stamped in the block. More than just look great, this one
also shows great care. That's why it fires up easily and runs
smoothly. The three-speed manual transmission gives you proper
control. And while it rides with that true classic feeling, a full
chassis lube in 2019 also helps keep it feeling smooth and
confident.
