The W180 body style was a larger sedan from the W120 version and in
1956 the 220S replaced the 220A version. This update provided some
extra chrome work, larger 2.2L Inline 6cyl and was offered in a
sedan or cabriolet version. These "pontoon" era vehicles are
instantly recognizable and a true testament of German engineering
and style after the WWII era. Mercedes was adamant of being a
powerhouse of style and engineering once again and this worldwide
distribution allowed them to set their footprint back across the
globe.
We are very pleased to bring to market this stunning 3 owner 1959
Mercedes 220S in the very unique and rare two tone body color of
Moss Green with the Mother of Green upper. Vehicle was recently
acquired from a long term ownership where he stated he owned
vehicle since 1995 and then retitled into his person name from
business in 2015. He had over 12 vintage Mercedes in his collection
and a long term mechanic close by to maintain the vehicles.
This car is a great driving vehicle with all four gears engaging
very smooth and easy. The wood trim is a testament to how wood trim
used to be with heavy accents and solid surfaces. Inside the car
has very clean seats, door panels and headliner with the only
modification we could tell was the aftermarket stereo hidden in the
glove box. Vehicle runs on newer tires that are mounted to the
factory style 13in wheels painted to match. Under the hood is the
large 2.2L Inline 6cyl that produced 100HP and was quick to get
upto highway speeds back in the day. Dual carbs was a great feature
as well and vehicle started up with ease. There are recent sales
that boast numbers into the $45-$55k range and cabriolets that are
well above the six figure amount. Offered here is a very clean,
well sorted and reliable 220S that can be enjoyed and driven to any
car show and be a contender for an award.
