Vehicle Description
1959 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe
"Pink in the mirror on top of the hill,
It's just like swallowin' up a medicine pill.
First thing i saw that Cadillac grille
Doin' a hundred and ten gallopin' over that hill.
Off hill curve, a downhill stretch,
Me and that Cadillac neck by neck."
For consignment the ultimate status symbol from the end of the 50s
in the form of a Cadillac Series 62 Coupe. This long and luxurious
land yacht complete with massive fins, big steel slab sides, is a
real cruiser, and way over what you think is status quo. Bought in
2001 at the Hershey, Pennsylvania show by hedge fund manger then
purchased in 2008 by our consignor. During his ownership the car
was garage kept, shown and taken out only in nice weather. In a
realm all its own...Cadillac!
Exterior
Keeping in true 1950s mantra the larger the chrome and fins, the
more it will sell, and this car holds the record for largest fins,
a record likely to never be set by an auto manufacturer ever again.
Huge slab sides are drenched in Inverness Green have good gaps. A
below the beltline trim spear rockets rearward and just above those
history-making rear quarters are the Harley Earl magnum opus in the
form of the tail fins that have never been outdone. These fins melt
into the rear roll pan and a large chrome bumper takes over with an
egg crate filled design in the center and jet engine like openings
that hold the reverse lights. Large steel for the hood and trunk
along with rear fender skirts have this car looking like it's ready
for blast off instead of a leisurely cruise down the boulevard.
Raked and windswept glass and both ends keep the car with a nice
sleek low look, all the while a white steel roof gives the car a
touch of a custom look. Cadillac...a new measure of greatness!
Interior
A swing of the doors and more excess can be sniffed out and more
eye candy is before us. The door panels have a tango going on
between the green vinyl along with black and green carlisle cloth
all the while chrome trimmings and accenting badging make their
presence known. These trimmings are in good condition while the
vinyl is showing some slight fading. Feasting our eyes on what we
are about to park our posteriors on we see black and green carlisle
metallic cloth centers in a tuck and roll pattern with smooth green
vinyl bolsters for the front and rear benches. The upholstery is in
grand condition and caresses us like a perfectly fit glove. Pastel
green tubs cradle the front bench, all sitting in a black sea of
beautiful clean carpeting. A futuristic styled GM dash with a
central gauge speedo cluster and dual surrounding circles of
encased metal controls is in front of a two toned light and dark
green plastic covered steering wheel in two spoke form. Toggles in
the corners of the wrap around dash are for the wiper and washer
buttons all within easy reach of the pilot. The dash has climate
controls, dual ash receptacles, a big glovebox, and plenty of shiny
trimmings throughout. The tight headliner presents in light green
and shows some prior water staining. The world's best synonym for
quality!
Drivetrain
Muscling open the steel long hood and we see a restored and clean
engine bay with a correct 390ci V8 topped by a single 4-barrel
Carter carburetor along with a new ignition coil and fuel pump. A
Hydramatic 4-speed automatic transmission is attached to the back,
and a 3.36 cruising rear axle is on this model. Engine bay is
nicely patina covered and fairly clean but original. The choice
without a compromise!
Undercarriage
Patina, Patina, Patina with some surface rust, and finely aged but
well-kept surfaces and structure on this undercarriage. A
reinforced X frame is below and attached are independent coil
springs for the front ride and a 4 link with coil springs for the
back. Power drum brakes are all around. Dual exhaust is on and
appears like new. We do note that the right rear axle seal is
leaking and needs to be addressed before any long drives are taken.
Cadillac...first in the world's esteem!
Drive-ability
The luxurious cruiser fired right up, and I was off like a land
rocket ship on a mission. She ran swimmingly, turned about 1000
heads, and all worked well. My cohort and I did manage to take up
half of the drive thru at our local McDonalds with the sheer length
of this car. Now if we only had an A&W Rootbeer in the locale
just to see if they kept the parking stalls the same size.
Cadillac...a realm of motoring majesty!
Harley Earl nailed the excess with the design of this Caddy. In
this writer's mind it is the best example of the Caddy bar none.
Plenty of conveniences, plenty of chrome, and those tail fins with
the quad rocket nose taillights on top, it just bleeds the
midcentury spaceship, pushbutton, pills for meals lifestyle. An
awesome example, and I may have a hot nut for this as it's the year
of my birth, although I'm nearly as excessive but the car requires
much less maintenance!
