Vehicle Description
1978 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
To mark the Corvettes 25th Anniversary, some notable improvements
were made. The 1978 Corvettes had a new fastback roofline and rear
window. These changes enhanced the Corvette's sleek silhouette. The
new and improved rear window not only allowed for a cleaner styling
profile; it also improved visibility for the driver and added extra
luggage space. Inside, there is also room for storage of the
removable roof panels. A larger, plastic-lined fuel tank was also a
new addition to the '78 Vette. Capacity was boosted from 17 to 24
gallons. The instrument panel was also restyled and featured
face-mounted, round, easy to read instruments.
Happy 25th anniversary for this 1978 Corvette! And now it can be
yours as it is up for consignment and gracing our hallowed halls in
all its Frost Blue anniversary badged glory. A T topper, rear
greenhouse glass and an L-48 350ci base engine and a stunning dark
blue interior, so let's celebrate the marriage of fiberglass and
steel, the Corvette. This Corvette was the owner's pride and joy
and garage kept until his passing about 6 months ago. The
transmission was rebuilt by an ASE certified mechanic and the car
was always maintained. Good condition would describe this car.
Exterior
Fiberglass bathed in a Frost Blue paint is showing off nicely with
just a few dings and scratches on this 'Vette. No chrome, just
neoprene crash bumpers at the end of the long, long hood. Hidden
headlights, nicely curved front quarters with the "cove", sleek
styled doors with their inset top handle, the greenhouse rear glass
and rounded rear bumper which is integrated and sports the round
Corvette taillights can be seen and enjoyed with your eyes. This
model is equipped with removable body colored T tops. Some light
scuffing is seen on the passenger's door and the rear of the car
has a much more defined shine than the front. This is due to prior
paint work to repair scratches and scuffs. 15-inch polished shiny
wheels are on all 4 corners, and all wrapped with raised white
letter Cooper radials.
Interior
High back buckets right out of 1978 and wrapped in dark blue
leather make up the passenger and driver's seating. Minor wear to
the leather is noted at the edges of these chairs. This is fronted
by a clean blue dash with black instrument panels in front of the
driver and in the center of the dash. This square design dash has
the speedometer, tachometer, as well as a veritable Christmas tree
of warning lights. A tilt/telescoping steering wheel column has
been added to the options list. A clean dark blue rimmed leather
wrapped steering wheel fronts this dash. Door panels also use the
dark blue covering in stitched leather. There is a lower dark blue
carpeting panel at the bottom of each door giving a background to
the armrest and pull. The same dark gray carping floods the floors
and is in clean and good condition. Up top, a removable T top is
installed and opens the cockpit up to airflow. The rear storage
area is also covered in the dark blue carpeting which has slight
fading to its presentation. An AM/FM/8 Track player resides in the
dashboard and comes with several 8 track cassettes for your
listening pleasure.
Drivetrain
Under the forward flipping hood is a 350ci L48 V8 numbers matching
mill. This engine appears untouched with its blue painted block and
valve covers. A block air cleaner housing sits atop a single
4-barrel carburetor to feed it fossils 1968. A numbers matching
TH350 3-speed automatic transmission now on back with a 3.08
Positraction rear axle.
Undercarriage
Very nicely preserved underneath with smooth floors and a rust-free
frame. Only surface rust shows on the frame and suspension
components. Independent front suspension with coil springs is on
front and for the independent rear suspension there is a frame
anchored differential unit with transverse leaf springs. Power disc
brakes are seen on all 4 corners and power steering is noted. Newer
single exhaust sends spent fossils to the rear of the car and exits
as a dual tailpipe and stock style muffler set up. We do note that
the driver's rear tire is wet on the inside, this could be from a
seeping caliper, but no excessive brake pedal travel was noted
during our drive.
Drivability
I'm in love with the late C3 Corvettes and this car got my juices
flowing. I was fresh out of my signature scent, Hai Karate, for
this drive but I was in luck as a fresh bottle was found residing
in the glovebox. She fired right up and on the test track it
performed beautifully. Nice smooth acceleration, smooth shifting
and good brakes. It handles like it's on rails and the T top option
is a nice feature without having to fuss with a canvas mechanism.
All functions were working well during our test driving experience
with the exception of the A/C, which our consignor says simply
needs to be charged.
Happy motoring, carving corners, cruising, outside airflow to make
your hair blow around, being pushed back into your seat, these are
all qualities you can expect when seated inside this 1978 version
of the Corvette. With only some minor scuffs and some paint fade
this car shows well and performs as good. Happy 25th Anniversary
Corvette!
