Vehicle Description
1991 GMC Syclone
The GMC Syclone is a high-performance version of the GMC Sonoma
pickup. Produced in 1991 by GMC along with PAS - the same company
credited with building the famed 1989 Turbo Trans Am. The Sylcone
spawned the similarly powered 1992-1993 GMC Typhoon based on the
Jimmy platform. The Syclone was only available in black. For the
upcoming 1992 production, a wider range of colors was to be offered
however the Syclone was canceled before full production could
begin. In total 2,998 Syclones were built. Out of that number only
3 were built in 1992. The #0001 truck was used for DOT crash
testing while the other 2 are privately owned.
The exterior registers as sinister. Add gallons of black paint and
some snazzy stickers-badges and voila! We have a winner folks. A
limited production AWD truck that is all stock with the exception
of an aftermarket boost gauge and always regularly maintained with
service records available. These trucks are rare to begin with and
it's even rarer to find one that hasn't been molested, we proudly
give you the one and only GMC Syclone to grace the hallowed halls
of the Classic Auto Mall.
Exterior
Purchased by our consignor in August 1999, lovingly cared for along
the way and appearing at first glance to be a mild-mannered run of
the mill GMC Sonoma this truck has a few tricks up its sleeve.
Black paint, blackened trimmings, tinted windows and a fire red set
of badges are the only deviations seen here from the all black
theme. Straight steel well minded gaps, nice paint, and a black
vinyl bed cover keep this truck looking like it is speeding along
even when standing still. A peek under the bed cover shows a cargo
area that hasn't seen much cargo, no dents seen here, just some
light scuffs and scratches on the inside of the tailgate. Machined
and natural finish aluminum wheels fill the wheel openings and are
wrapped in 245/50R16 Goodyear Firehawk rubber.
Interior
With a swing of the door, we are greeted with a blend of colors and
materials. The door panels include just about every facet of
interior engineering. We see black cloth, charcoal carpeting,
charcoal vinyl, and gray plastic. All of this holds the armrest,
power window switch, and power lock switch. Bucket seats in black
velour have a very wide tuck and roll insert pattern with long
smooth bolsters. Red piping breaks up the sea of black and Syclone
is stitched into the headrests in the same red material. These
buckets flank a center console that holds an oversized storage
compartment along with the gear selector and a pair of cupholders.
A leather wrapped ergonomic steering wheel fronts a rectangular
panel that holds the gauge layout. Headlight and HVAC controls
flank this cluster and to the right is the factory AM/FM/Cassette
player. The only deviation from factory stock is an Autometer Sport
Comp boost gauge mounted on the A-pillar. Black carpet floods the
floors and shows slight fading. A tight black headliner hangs
above.
Drivetrain
Crammed into the engine bay is a 4.3L turbocharged V6. This engine
is fed by EFI and not only has a turbo but also an intercooler. All
is complete under the hood while showing some patina on the litany
of hoses, wiring, and ducting. A 4L60E 4-speed automatic, swiped
from the Corvette, is on the back. This transmission feeds power
through a Borg Warner 4472 transfer case and then to the front and
rear axles which weigh in at a 3.42 ratio with limited slip.
Undercarriage
Just a slight bit of surface rust on the frame structure but
otherwise clean and rust-free structure and underside. Power disc
brakes are on front, and power drums for the rear. A stock style
muffler system hangs underneath. Independent coil spring suspension
is up front and leaf springs are on the rear all to provide a
comfortable sure footed ride.
Drivability
I slipped into the plush and comfy driver's seat and off to the
test track I went. I was met with neck snapping acceleration,
especially once the turbo kicked in, great handling, bias free
braking, and nary a hint of tire spin thanks to the AWD platform.
The automatic transmission shifted firmly, and all functions were
working as they should. We do note that the anti-lock brake light
is on.
Join the ranks of the limited Syclone owners as with only under
3,000 built they don't come up for sale very often. All black, all
beautiful, and ready to surprise some unsuspecting Corvettes,
Camaros, and Mustangs. Come visit the Classic Auto Mall and get
ready to haul some cargo and some ass!
