For Sale: 1970 Oldsmobile 98 in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1970 Oldsmobile 98 Convertible

The Oldsmobile 98, (spelled Ninety-Eight from 1952 to 1961 and Ninety Eight from 1992 to 1996), was the fullsize flagship model that was produced from 1940 until 1996. The name, reflecting a Series 90 fitted with an 8 cylinder engine, first appeared in 1941 and was used again after American consumer production resumed post World War II. It was, as it would remain, the division's top of the line model, with lesser Oldsmobiles having lower numbers such as the 66, 68, 76 and 78. The Series 60 was retired in 1949, the same year the Oldsmobile 78 was replaced by the 88. The 76 was retired after the 1950 model year. This left the two remaining number names to carry on into the 1990's as the bread and butter of the full size Oldsmobile lineup.

For consignment, a well-kept Olds 98 convertible from way back in 1970. Squares and rectangles were starting to creep up in automobile designs and this car has them. At over 225" long, 80" wide, a 126" wheelbase, and weighing in at 4422lbs this is one large and in charge drop top.

Exterior
This lengthy steel slab sided car with good gaps, presentable but slightly wavy sides and light blue paint in fair condition showing some loss of luster, chipping and staining. The original paint, Reef Turquoise, is shown under the chipping and in the trunk. On top is a sprawling white canvas roof with a glass rear window. While the top does have some staining it is free of rips and tears. Chrome and brite work is good, with some very slight pitting, and light staining. The spacious trunk is in good condition, and has the original liner and cardboard sides that are showing their age. Standard Oldsmobile hubcaps are seen all around.

Interior
A long white leather bench seat with horizontal seams and buttons to break up the expanse sits between the doors and provides room for 3 with the armrest folded up. The leather is worn but tear free. The rear seat mimics the front in design and upholstery. It is separated at the top by a chrome grilled speaker. The rear seat is showing some yellowing of the leather especially in the seat back tuck and roll design. Door panels are in the same white leather and condition with a central armrest that houses the power window, lock, and seat adjustment switches. Looking at the square/rectangle design dash, one sees a mixture of the faux woodgrain, black molded plastic, and a padded vinyl dash pad also in black. Black carpet floods the floors and is protected by a factory style rubber floor mat.

Drivetrain
A 455ci Rocket V8 with a Rochester 4-barrel carburetor will get this mass down the road quickly and coupled with the 3-speed TH400 automatic transmission and a 2.56 geared axle cruising rpms will be fairly low.

Undercarriage
The undercarriage shows some surface rust, and plenty of patina on the paint and metal. Independent coil spring front suspension is on along with a 4 link and coil spring rear suspension. Power disc and drum brakes provide the whoa factor while power steering makes navigation a breeze. Single exhaust is seen and is intact.

Drivability
This car started with ease and handled the test track without any issues. The big V8 provides plenty of cruising power and with the top down we were on top of the world. All functions were functioning at the time of our drive with the exception of the A/C which blew warm air, but who cares? It's a drop top!

A few steps above a barn find in that the top, upholstery and body are very presentable. A weekend's worth of elbow grease and the top and interior will be looking snazzy and new. Add in another weekend with the buffer and the dull paint may come back to its glory. Either way you'll have over 2 tons of fun in this land yacht from 1970!
