It is just four letters, but to Camaro enthusiasts they always mean
a lot. This COPO 9561 is remarkable in many ways, built by the
factory to extreme performance specifications with excellent
history and a hi-level restoration. Beyond that this may be one of
the most important examples to come up for sale recently. In 1969,
this car was special ordered through Leighton Chevrolet in York,
Maine. It is only one of a handful painted in Burgundy that year
(2.5%), and was one of only two COPO cars delivered to this
location. Known locally as "King Rat" this car came new with the
L72 427 engine, complete with ZL2 hood, rare 4346 Holley 4-barrel
carburetor and a cowl induction air cleaner. That option's $489.75
cost increased by another $322.10 when the M22 Rock Crusher was
added, and the $42.15 code-BE912G differential gave it a 4.56
Positraction rear gear! Most COPO Camaros were basic, built to go
fast and little more, yet this car was also optioned with center
console, AM radio, power disc brakes and Rally wheels, pushing the
sticker price over $4,000. A late-year build, this car retains its
original sheet metal with no rust repair needed, an intact trunk
with one quarter panel replaced due to damage w/NOS panel. Its
history is known from the purchase date in October 1969. Most
recently, the acclaimed Supercar Workshop crew in Pennsylvania gave
it a multi-year fully documented restoration to its as-delivered
condition. Date coded down to the starter and featuring
era-specific Goodyear white-stripe tires this car will need
nothing. Incredibly documented with the original dealer order,
dealer sales invoice and owner history, the sale will include that
paperwork, as well as restoration photos, invoices and receipts
reaching nearly the $200k mark.
