Vehicle Description
1960 Chevrolet Dragster
A dragster is a specialized competition automobile used in drag
racing. Dragsters, also commonly called "diggers", can be broadly
placed in three categories, based on the fuel they use: gasoline,
methanol, and nitromethane. They are most commonly single-engined,
though twin-engined and quad-engined designs did race in the 1950s
and 1960s. The design of dragsters evolved from the front-engined
rail, (named for the exposed frame rails), of the earliest days of
drag racing, into the "slingshot", (with the driver between or
behind the rear tires, or "slicks"), of the early to middle 1960s,
to the "modern" type common in the 1970s. Depending on the class
they run in, dragsters can be injected or supercharged, (or
turbocharged), with a variety of possible engines. The engines are
most often derived from automobiles.

For consignment, a throwback to the early days of the dragster
commonly known as the "rail" or "digger". This front engined
lightweight rear cockpit rail framed machine was meant to do one
task. Go fast in a straight line. And remember retro is very cool!
Even if it means the differential is right between your legs.
Hmmmmm
Exterior
Keep it simple and this racer does with its rail frame and thin
metal coverings for the engine area and working its way back to
form the driver's tub. On back are Carroll Shelby Cal 500 wheels
wrapped in large wide slicks. In front, Borrani spoked tiny wheels
are wrapped in 3.00 x 18 rubber. A roll bar extends from the rail
framing and protects the driver outside the cockpit. A parachute
helps with the slowdown. It is amazing how simple the construction
really is.
Interior
A simple stripped-down cockpit with a dual winged drag style
steering wheel, metal gas pedal and tubular metal brake. A black
bomber style seat with racing belts and there you have it. Now go
sit at the tree and await the green lights to come on.
Drivetrain
Smack dab in the middle of this racer is a Chevy 327ci V8. This
codes out as being cast between 1962 and 1967. Double hump of heads
are now attached and it has a 4-barrel Holley carburetor on top,
and a Powerglide transmission on back. A large scoop fabricated
from metal, and snarly short pipe exhaust reach for the sky on
either side. On back between your legs is a 3.64 rear with a Mickey
Thompson magnesium center section.
This car will need to undergo some changes to run on a drag strip
legally but is a fantastic throwback to the early days of the rail
and shades of Big Daddy, and Don the Snake Prudhomme. It has
actually seen some strip time in California in the late 70's and
early 80's. All was much simpler and more dangerous then, but the
look of this dragster is just eye catching and mesmerizing at the
same time. Also noted with this car and in the photos is a 1998
Spokane Kiwk Box with header extensions, and this comes with the
dragster.
