Vehicle Description
Turbocharged, all-wheel drive, and awesomely sleek... this 2005
Volvo V70R doesn't even need to boast about its safety record in
the headline to be attractive. Instead, the allure is from a quick
and nimble machine with awesome style and plenty of luxury
features.
Volvo didn't invent the wagon, but we can arguably say they
perfected it. The V70 has a premium crafted look where the rounded
corner of the headlights helps establish a style line that runs the
full profile. And of course, this is the hot R-version. Volvo
doesn't like to shout its sporting nature from the rooftops,
because that's not the Swedish way. But the special bumper with
deep air intake, rear hatch spoiler, and special R-level 17-inch
alloys are tasteful additions that European car fans instantly
recognize. It's all about being a bit more subtle and offering a
fast-with-class attitude. That's why the Mystic Silver retains a
nice glow, but nothing too flashy. And it goes well with the deeply
tinted windows.
The spacious interior is pure Swedish cool. After all, only Volvo
(and maybe Maserati) can mix black with dark blue. It's not just
the leather seats and door panels, there are plenty of cool blue
details, including the background for the dials. Because this
rivals the German sports sedans/wagons for power, it also delivers
the level of luxury you could expect from a BMW or Mercedes. This
includes a long list of features, like power front seats
(w/driver's memory), power windows, power locks, keyless
entry/alarm, a premium AM/FM/CD six-disc changer, a power sunroof,
and dual-zone automatic A/C climate control. As a true Volvo, you
get a terrific safety rating and features like dual front airbags,
side airbags, and anti-lock brakes. The odometer reflects the car's
full mileage, but you can also see from the condition of the
interior there is less wear than its contemporaries. That's the
right sign of good care. So this seems to have led a careful
suburban life where all that cargo room was more likely to carry a
few groceries rather than bringing in dogs from the field.
What makes the V70R such a hot car today (and a great future
collectible contender) is the motor. The 2.5-liter was specially
enhanced with a new turbocharger and other go-fast goodies to give
it 300 horsepower. That instantly puts it right next to the top BMW
5-Series wagons. And making sure this feels like a terrific
European is a sharp handling fully independent suspension and the
confidence of all-wheel drive. But this is not just a sports wagon.
The inline five-cylinder motor has a smooth nature, and the
five-speed automatic transmission has a great balance of a sporting
nature that also has easy overdrive comfort. Add in power steering,
cruise control, and four-wheel disc brakes, and you have a great
anytime driving package.
Complete with the owner's manual packet, this is the distinct,
speedy, and all-around useful wagon you've always wanted. And this
future classic may likely never be so within reach again. Call
