After TEN generations of awesome coupes and convertibles, Ford
executives pulled the plug on Thunderbird production in late 1997.
Fact was, the market had been moving away from two-door offerings
for decades, and Ford was more interested in building on the
monumental success of their Taurus sedan and wagon. That is, until
the 'new Beetle' and Chrysler's infamous PT Cruiser tapped into a
massive retro craze that would steer the entire automotive industry
for years to come. With the Thunderbird marque, Ford execs knew
they had an ace in the hole. And when they unveiled this car,
lovingly nicknamed the 'retrobird', it was considered a stroke of
genius! Today, almost 20 years after the last retrobird was
assembled, these cars hold steady alongside Prowlers and SSRs as
unique modern collectibles that define an era of American
automotive history. And that's not even considering how great this
6,463-mile cruiser is to drive!
