Vehicle Description
1984 Chevrolet El Camino
Was the El Camino a car? A pick-up truck? Well, it combined the
best of both worlds. It was designed to feel as comfortable as a
coupe for couples going to church on Sunday and still be capable of
carrying farm products to markets during weekdays - a perfect
mashup for practicality at that time. Ford Australia had already
made "utes" - short for utility coupes - popular with Australian
farmers back in the '30s, but none existed in the US. Not only did
Chevy "copy" the Ford Ranchero idea, but they also decided to slap
a Spanish name on it, just like Ford did on their utility coupe.
Ranchero in Spanish means "rancher." On the other hand, El Camino
directly translated means "the way."
For consignment a powerful 454ci engine, (not original, circa
1988), a nice two tone paint scheme, bed covering, and leather
interior, you are styling in this 1984 Version of the El Camino.
Chrome Cragar 5 spoke wheels and larger tires make this a great
cruiser.
Exterior
Square and rectangle design abound on all surfaces of this
car/pickup version. Dual square headlights, a square opening for
the egg crate grille and all this in a rectangle front end. Some
extra fairings are on below the bumper and these surround this
vehicle. Continuing around the entire car, with rocker fairings and
deeper fronts wheel wells. A scooped hood to give the 454ci extra
breathing room, and all bathed in burgundy with a silver roof, B
pillars and bedside toppers. The mid section of this car is
burgundy and then just past the midline is more silver on the front
cowlings and side fairings. On the back, covering the bed is a
solid lift up tonneau cover, which when raised reveals a full
burgundy painted bed in straight rust free steel that has a rubber
liner covering for the floor. Badging is all shiny and correct, and
the paint is nice and deep on the burgundy and the silver. 15-inch
Chrome Cragar wheels are on all 4 corners, and are wrapped in
215/70R15's in front and big 275/60R15's on back.
Interior
Inside we see the usage of three colors starting with the door
panel uppers which are molded and padded smooth stitched saddle,
(tan), vinyl. About half way and a molded plastic armrest and tray
to house the door locks and mirror joystick presents in gray, and
on the bottom heavy use of burgundy carpeting, all surfaces looking
like new. Nice condition high back buckets are flanking a burgundy
center console with some black accenting and a large glovebox in
back. Square and rectangle design for the dash which is burgundy
and black and all in very good condition. A nice wood rimmed rally
3 spoke steering wheel is fronting this clean and original dash.
Also installed into the dash center is an aftermarket AM/FM/CD
stereo system. A single leather cup holder is hanging from either
side of the plastic center console portion that is covering the
hump. Speaking of which, it is covered with burgundy fade free
carpeting.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a clean and gleaming 454ci V8 circa 1988. This is
topped with a 4-barrel carburetor, and has a 700R4 4-speed
automatic transmission on the back. She throws power rearward to a
10-bolt rear axle.
Undercarriage
All clean and newly painted in black we have a total rust free
environment. Independent coil springs are upfront, and on the back
is a 4 link with coil springs to smooth the ride when heavy cargo
is in the bed. Power disc brakes are on front, and power drums for
the back along with power steering. Headers are also on this 454ci
V8.
Drive-Ability
Very nicely appointed with the tri tone interior, and leather
buckets, this car started with a quick turn of the key and it was
off to the test track. Here it accelerated nicely with the 4bbl and
the 454 cubes and handled very well because it is a truck after
all. Albeit a low riding one. Bias free braking was experienced,
and all functions were working as they should.
An overall very nicely presenting version of the El Camino from
1984. This leather interior, hard tonneau covered rubber lined bed
car/truck is running very nicely and looking very snappy. Come to
Classic Auto Mall where you can experience this and many others but
let this one show you "The Way".
