PROOFING . this car was built with the upgraded 4100 motor With
regards to the 1982-'85 aluminum 4.1L (249) engines, the problem
source was maintaining the seal between the cast-iron cylinder head
and the aluminum intake manifold. Over time--generally 80,000 to
100,000 miles--the gaskets would disintegrate, creating coolant
leaks. The engine could then overheat and eventually warp the
block. The distortion affected the cam bearings only. The GM engine
coolant supplement pellets were essential to prevent minor leaks in
the cooling system by retarding the erosion and are essential to
maintaining the seal at the intake gasket. These were often not
used on a regular basis by owners. In 1985, there was a change in
the casting of the blocks for these engines--reinforcements were
added. Eldorados with serial numbers after FE623772 had this new
block and are sought after by knowing buyers. Please Note The
