... 1978 is the best year yet to buy a new Pontiac. - Pontiac
brochure headline That dealer-brochure boast of best year is bound
to get a rise out of enthusiasts of all stripes when it's applied
to any make and model. However, for Pontiac in general, and for the
Trans Am in particular, it's pretty hard to argue that 1978 was
anything but a very special year for a very special car. The heat
of the muscle-car wars of the late Sixties might have passed, but
as late as 1978, Pontiac was still building plenty of excitement
into the Trans Am. Offered here is a collector-quality, extremely
well-documented 1978 Trans Am in white over black. What's more,
this Trans Am has traveled just 45,000 miles in all, or just over
1,000 miles per-year on average. The original owner not only took
meticulous care of his pride and joy, he kept extensive records and
(now vintage) literature, all included in the sale. The condition
of the body panels and the white paint is excellent, free of
damage, scrapes, and discoloration. There are no sun-fading issues.
Body-panel alignment (including fender flares) is similarly proper;
both lift-out tinted-glass roof panels fit properly (their storage
bag is included). Decals-notably the screaming chicken on the hood,
but also the Trans Am identification on the rear deck and front
fenders-retains its factory-new appearance. The twin blacked-out
front grilles and center Pontiac emblem are likewise free of
damage. Factory five-spoke aluminum wheels with Pontiac-logo center
caps are mounted with raised-white-letter GoodYear Wingfoot HP
tires. Inside, seating surfaces are upholstered in anthracite
velour fabric, part of an optional upgrade. No unusual wear is
present, and absolutely no rips or tears on the front buckets or
rear 2-passenger bench. The original Firebird-branded sport
steering wheel (in black) frames a black dashboard accented with
turned-metal trim that surrounds both the tachometer and
speedometer, as well as an array of engine-monitoring gauges. All
instrument lenses are clear-faced; all graphic markings on
instruments and other control surfaces are crisp and un-worn.
Metal-trimmed pedals were part of the upgraded interior option.
Appropriate for the model that starred in Smokey and the Bandit, a
combination CB/AM-FM pushbutton stereo is mounted. The
console-mounted 4-speed manual-transmission shifter still sports
the Pontiac-logo shift-pattern insert which remains in remarkably
good condition; the power window buttons are also located on the
console. The glove box still holds the original owner's manual.
Under the hood, the T/A 6.6 liter V8 (the upgraded, optional W72)
rests beneath its through-the-hood shaker air intake. Engine-block
paint is the original Pontiac shade of turquois. All related
components are properly located, and the engine bay is clean and
tidy. The original build tag remains in the factory location.
Viewed from below, the car's chassis-including the full-length dual
exhaust system--is free of damage. There is no evidence of
too-aggressive or abusive driving styles. Be sure to review the
Trans Am's extensive array of documents pictured in the gallery.
Build sheet, order sheets, and window sticker are included, as well
as a variety of dealer literature and promotional material. Every
option on the car is documented here. Only someone who loves a car
