Vehicle Description
1968 Dodge Dart GTS
The 1968 Dodge Dart GTS is considered a compact muscle car, one
that solidified Dodge's performance-oriented image among the young
buyers of the '60s. It featured a boxy look by '67, which was
carried all the way to the end of the car's lifespan, but what it
didn't gain in looks it more than backed up in performance.
For consignment, a blazing red beefy Dart from the white hat guys.
This example is in excellent rust free condition with just a little
bodywork from previous times showing up intermittently. Awesome
power, and a snazzy interior with a center console to die for with
its futuristic design, grab this one before it flies out the door.
I'd consider it a "hat trick" on the old circle cork board. Topping
it off is a great back story... After being sold new to a Mennonite
family in New Holland, PA and being dealership repainted in black
to keep with the lifestyle our consignor purchased the car and
enjoyed it. He then sold it to a fellow in the military but was
lucky enough to get the car back when a muscle car didn't fit the
GI's family needs.
Exterior
Straight steel panels rock your world painted in screaming red. On
front is a simple grille with a single headlight on either side. On
the hood are 2 side vents that run near the front quarters and
allow for an easier inhalation for the mill. On the sides are round
marker lights with doughnut shaped bezels which are kind of an
iconic feature to these cars. On the B pillars is the
quintessential Fratzog badge, along with some GTS badges on the
hood and front quarters. A wrap around the back trunk and rear
quarter racing stripe in black. One can then look slightly forward
and see the rear curved in glass with small flying buttress B
pillars. On back a trio of horizontal tail and backup lights flare
out to the sides and play off a central DODGE badged rear trim
piece in aluminum and black paint. GTS sits atop the trunk lid.
Dual exhaust peek out from underneath. 14-inch rally Fratzog badged
wheel coverings are wrapped in blackball rubber giving this car a
slightly utilitarian look.
Interior
When it comes to the exterior on this car, we know we have a
runner, but for the interior it becomes a stunner. Red accenting
with painted door sills and bottoms with a molded vinyl center in
contrasting black has a GTS badge floating just above the door
handle/armrest and window crank. Simple but elegant. Inside red
carpeting is unavoidable and screaming out for your attention.
Which after a peek, we can move to the smooth black vinyl bomber
styled buckets which flank a snazzy center console with ribbed red
panels and chromed surrounds. This has a great shape as it dives
under the dash and houses the shifter. Speaking of the dash it is a
thin design mostly in black with clean original gauge
configuration, and a newer aftermarket AM/FM Radio sans its control
knobs. In back is a nice wide bench for the passenger's enjoyment
complete with seat belts. Seen is a tight black headliner
above.
Drivetrain
Under the hood in a rocking' red engine bay all shiny and bright,
is a date code correct (6-22-67 casting date and 2226, (Friday
September 1st 1967), stamping date), 340ci V8 which can pump out
275hp. On top feeding it is a Carter AVS 4-barrel carburetor. An
A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission and an 8-3/4 inch
3.23 gear rear axle complete the drive train. Nicely preserved,
never bored and just a rebuild to button it all up on the power
side.
Undercarriage
A slight overall patina, and some minor road dirt, but all solid
and structurally sound underneath. Seen for the ride are front
torsion bars, and on back leaf springs. Also, drum brakes are on
all 4 corners. Noted this engine sports headers and dual exhaust.
Power steering is noted to make all that muscle a breeze to
steer.
Drive-Ability
A nice smooth driver with easy steering, great acceleration, and
bias free panic stopping. The radio did not work, but that's ok I
like the sound of the engine pumping out that HP! Ripped it...
Nicely done, particularly on the exterior paint, and trimmings. The
interior is very retro with that mid century modern console design,
and simple instrumentation appearing all original. Definitely a
bulls eye for this Dart.
