The infamous "K-code" designation is a very tough option to find in
any of the 1.8 million Mustangs produced from '65-'67. In fact,
only 7,273 Mustangs received this K-code 289ci performance variant
in the 1965 production year (1.1% of all Mustangs built in 1965
were K-codes). It would also be the exact vehicle selected by road
racer, Carroll Shelby, as his platform vehicle to build his
legendary GT350! The option included a solid lifter 289ci V8 with
aluminum flat-top pistons, heavy duty connecting rods, larger rod
bolts, nodular cast iron crankshaft with larger counterbalance for
higher rpm's, dual point distributor, special Autolite carburetion
and header type manifolds with H-pipe dual exhaust. These combined
components produced an incredible 271 horsepower at 6,000rpm! If
selected, it would be the most expensive individual option on the
sales order which came standard with special geared top loader
4-speed manual transmission, larger 9" rear axle, and Special
Handling Package to provide stiffer springs, shocks, and front
stabilizer bar! It was a brutish factory powertrain and could not
be combined with power steering, power disc brakes, or air
conditioning. A weekend racer's delight!

octane pump gas! We estimate it has more to offer now back in low
land conditions!
