EXPERIENCE Following in the footsteps of five highly acclaimed
generations of Mercedes-Benz SL sports models, the R231 line
introduced in December 2011 had a very tough act to follow.
However, the new SL and its capabilities were never in doubt, with
equal doses of open-air style, amazing luxury, and pure performance

Formally introduced to the world at the January 2012 North American
International Auto Show in Detroit, the new SL featured aluminum
construction for the first time with a new lightweight aluminum
bodyshell weighing about 110 kilograms less than its predecessor.
Other interesting R231 features include the FrontBass system using
the spaces inside the bodys various aluminum structures in front of
the footwells as resonance spaces for the audio systems bass
speakers, plus adaptive windshield wipers/washers using water
collected from the wiper blades as required and depending on the
wipers direction. Handling and road holding are exceptional, with
the new Mercedes using two different suspension systems, with
semi-active adjustable damping the standard setting and ABC (Active
Body Control) optional.The SL500 is the primary R231 model for the
North American market, with its 4.7-liter DOHC V-8 engine putting
down 429 horsepower with electronic fuel injection and intercooled
twin turbochargers. Acceleration from rest to 60 mph requires just
4.1 seconds and while top speed is electronically limited to 155
mph, Car and Driver road testers hit an indicated 159 mph. Handling
the forward urge of the SL500 is electromechanical speed-sensitive
power steering and huge disc brakes on all four corners. A
masterfully engineered power-retractable hardtop provides top-down
enjoyment with all-season comfort and weather protection at the
touch of a button. Production of these sophisticated modern SL
models continues with updates today and as before it is sure to
become yet another highly regarded modern classic from
