For consignment, one of two, and the only one left in it's street
format 2012 APR Stage 3 VW Super Beetle! (Say that 10 times real
fast!). Starting out with the APR stage 3 kit, downpipe,
intercooler and 2 inch lowering springs. The conversion to AWD
began in 2020. Now we have a one off super, super beetle...Read
on!!
Exterior
Look! It's a Porsche...NO its a round rocket ship in the form of an
AWD APR stage 3 Super Beetle. All bathed in Tornado (appropriate)
Red, it appears on the surface as your average sun-roofed Super
Beetle with nicely rounded design, still reminiscent of the early
beetles from the 40's. So, if you have a great thing why change it?
All well minded steel gaps, and a small spoiler on back and add in
a black rocker trim with a thin chromed insert, some APR flow
formed 19-inch cast wheels and 245/40R19's all around and you are
ready to pull up beside the best of the best, and taunt them!
Interior
A swing of the watertight doors and Toto I don't think we are in
Kansas Anymore. Two tone red inserted and black perforated leather,
courtesy of Katzkins. Beautifully sculpted seating in front and
rear, with red stitching, the better to hold you in while you reach
hyperspace speed. A center console races towards the dash and this
houses the shifter and some other functions which are explained in
detail by the consigner (methanol injection, tune calibration
setting, and more). Carbon fiber is on the dash front and creates
the entirely re-designed gauge cluster which is LED backlit. In the
center of the dash are a trio of more instrumentation to monitor
the now more powerful mill. Also, Navigation is within a Kenwood
DNX695S stereo. Black carpeting floods the floors and the tight
headliner has a skylight in the middle of the headliner.
Drivetrain
Starting with an APR motorsports short block, which was completely
built up to handle up to 750HP we still see 2.0 liters that pack a
mighty punch. The stock head was de-carbonized and fitted with a
new bearing and cam bridge. A Garret GT2871R turbo was installed,
and it is supported by an APR carbon fiber cold air intake/cleaner
with full diameter charge pipe. On back is an Audi TTS DSG close
ratio 6-speed automatic and an APR AWD downpipe. Within the
transmission is an APR TCU tune with launch control. Exhaling from
this mill is helped by an X-Force Golf R SS cat back exhaust.
Haldex wiring is integrated into this system. On the back is a
4.769 Golf R rear axle and subframe assembly. A port is available
to change the tuning depending on gas octane and performance you
want...please read these instructions carefully!
Undercarriage
For the all wheel drive, the entire original suspension was removed
and Independent coil springs that lower the car inches on all 4
corners. Power disc brakes are all around and all is looking great
under this car with no rust and just performance ready.
Drive-Ability
With plenty of performance options we decided to keep in the tune
our consignor set up for us to goto the test track. It accelerated
in this mode like there is no tomorrow and indeed if you keep your
foot into this car there will not be! All functions were working
well and as noted there is a tuning port so you can change
performance if you so desire.
Just a powerful build on many fronts. Obviously, the tunable engine
with the turbo, APR performance upgrades and conversion to AWD we
are now in rarefied air. The add in the custom Katzkins leather,
custom dash, extra gauges and beautiful interior, and of course the
unassuming exterior, and you are showing up to a knife fight with a
gun, but it looks like a knife.
