Vehicle Description
1981 AMC Jeep CJ7
An early version initially called the "Willys Overland" morphed
from military GP (general purpose) vehicle to the mass produced CJ,
short for "civilian Jeep". More than 1.5 million CJ Jeeps were
built, having continued the same basic body style for 45 years
since the Jeep first appeared. Widely regarded as "America's
workhorse", the CJs have been described as "probably the most
successful utility vehicle ever made." The word Jeep is an acronym
of the letters GP.
The call of the wild, the great outdoors, into the great wide open,
breathin' the fresh air, are all representative of this 1981 CJ
which has undergone a full frame off restoration, and now can take
you out to dinner in style, or to the top of the tallest trailed
peak. You decide, the wild is your oyster...(sic.). And you can
have a business on the side plowing snow if you wish.
Exterior
Absolutely wonderful would be the words to describe the beautiful
blue paint job on this restored jeep. Excellent gaps, excellent
panels, removable doors, custom roll bars, a white painted hardtop
and chromed bumpers, and we are 4 wheelin'. On the back a lift gate
and a tail gate open wide for your gear. 15-inch polished 16 spoke
wheels wrapped by Cooper Adventurer A/T tires are all around and on
back as a spare. These can go down the highway, or on any trail
just turn the front locking hubs. Some nice black vinyl fender
trimmings keep mud off the bodywork. Noted in front is a Meyers 7.5
foot plow with hydraulic lift, angle, and illumination on stalks,
all mounted nicely to the front bumper.
Interior
Starting at the beginning, a custom blue metal painted dash with
all the essentials and new gauges are embedded into the front and
bordered by a beautiful black padded dash top. An automatic
transmission, linked to a B&M shifter as well as numerous
toggle switches are also seen between the two like new blue vinyl
with small black and white speckled buckets. A removable blue vinyl
bench seat, and black carpeted floors add to your interior comfort.
All this is surrounded by a blue painted roll cage. The plain white
fiberglass top keeps plenty of light inside the cabin, and protects
the passengers from the exterior elements.
Drivetrain
258ci's grace the restored engine bay and they are in inline 6
cylinder form. It has been completely rebuilt and retains its
original bore. On top is a new 2bbl carburetor and this is fed by a
new fuel pump. A rebuilt transmission which was original to this
truck is behind the engine, and is an A999 Torqueflite 3-speed
automatic. A Dana 30 front axle is on front, and an AMC 20 rear
axle in 2.73 ratio is on back. Noted also from the consigner are a
new radiator, brake lines, master cylinder, and new wheels and
tires.
Undercarriage
Save for a few splatters, all is looking rust free and super sound
underneath this 4x4. Solid Leaf suspension is on front and rear,
and drum brakes are on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
All good on the driving front with this Jeep CJ7. It fired right up
and off to the test track where it ran nicely, shifted smoothly and
came to an abrupt halt bias free. The plow went up, down, and side
to side. The lighting was fully operational at the time of the test
drive. All working inside and clean black carpeting which is ultra
comfy.
If you are into the outdoors, and love to explore out of the way
places, then you should take a closer look at this great example,
with plenty of newly installed parts, engine rebuild and
transmission rebuild. Also with creature comforts, and many
upgrades, this will have any current "wrangler" pale in comparison.
An excellent build which will greatly exceed your expectations in
person. Elephant Hill (Utah) here I come. I can't wait for it to
snow again too! Money, money, money, money... M O N E Y!
